Ok ive been working out for 4 months and have lost 20 pounds! Yipee i want to start at a high intensity level now and take it to the next level.....im not big on running but can jog fairly smooth.....i know they say running is the fastest way to lose weight but can you jog for 3-4 miles and still get the same results? Im really curious about this question...if i run i am breathless after 5 mins!!! If i jog also will i eventually be able to run for 3-4 miles straight? do i have to work up to it? please answer thanks have a great day!!

First off congratulations
instead of running fast for the whole duration of your workout you should consider running sprints
meaning
jogging for 2-4 minutes followed by an all out sprint for 1 minute.....then return to jogging..............you shhould start by doing 4 minute jogs....1 min sprint.....when that gets easy change the jog to 3 minutes....the 2 minutes....then 1
its pretty much just a shock to your system that is harder for your body to adapt to......works better than plain old jogging

good luck

Its all about burning calories! So the only difference is Sprinting as fast as you can is going to build muscle, and burn a significant amount of calories. Jogging long distance is going to burn more calories but you will not build as much muscle. Based on what you wrote I would say your best bet is jogging for a while and get your stamina up. Then when you get up to your 3-4 miles try doing some sprinting.

How fast do you concider jogging? if you are jogging at 4 miles per hour, you will burn about 300-400 calories per hour. Running at 6 miles per hour (which really isn't that hard to condition to) will burn about 600-700 calories per hour. If you are running hard at 7.5 miles per hour you will burn about 1000-1500 calories per hour. I would run as fast as you can without becoming breathless... you will improve over time. Also to condition you can try to run as fast as you can for about 5 mins, then walk for 2 mins and repeat several times. good luck!

Pumken is not correct. Running burns far more calories than a slow jog...almost THREE TIME more calorie than running. you can lose weight walking/joggin, but your workout will have to be MUCH longer

For purposes of losing weight, jogging can be just as effective as running. It's the calories you burn, not how fast you burn them. Experts will tell you that a quick walk is just as good as a run.
