Both are Schedule /Class ll very potent narcotics. My mom was placed 4mg Dilaudid (highest dose at the time, now the make 8mp pills) for cancer pain and finally had to take the Dilaudid injected directly into the brain via Omar device. Her doctor told me it was the closest thing to legal heroin in the US at the time....1988.
The patch is an out patient form of an equally powerful Class ll pain killer originally available for administration via IV.
Both are reserved for the control and management of sever pain...terminal stage 4 end of life pain.
