I am 16, looking for the insurance not to be huge (4.0 student), don't want to pay more than max $150 a month, good on gas, reliable, nice size[not a truck or minivan, etc...], automatic, doesn't have to be new but in good shape
Basically just a good, inexpensive, reliable first car
Any tips for looking, an idea on a model, any help would be great!

i've got enough money to get started with legal papers and a down payment but otherwise i want to spend $150 a month on the car payment minus insurance, repairs, etc..

It is tough to give you suggestions on models and vehicles without knowing the market in your area. I do want to give you two things to consider: The first is that at age 16 you will not be able to get a car loan on your own, and will need a co-signer, preferably one with good credit. The second thing is that for every $1000 you want to finance you should expect to pay $20 per month, this number is based on a rate someone with a strong credit score would get. Given your budget you need to be looking at cars that cost no more than $7500. At this price you will probably not be able to find a car with less than 70000 miles on it. If you buy from a private party and not a dealer, you have to make sure that you get the opinion of a licensed mechanic about the vehicle you choose and a CarFax history report before purchasing. I would seriously consider not getting a car if this is the case. If you can only afford $150 a month then you aren't going to get a good one. The costs of gas, insurance, legal papers and maintenance and repair are going to be more than you could ever imagine to keep it in safe operating condition. Few teenagers have this kind of time or money. My payments are double that and I still have issues on a five year old car. The engine cost over $5000, for example. When high school students become car owners, their grade average usually drops one point. Since you're sixteen, you have one obligation and that's to get an education, not a car. Keep up the good grades is my advice. Then you can get a real nice car, and house; not to mention that you won't freak out every time the price of gas jumps up thirty cents a gallon.

Depends on what your price range is...For reliability, something like a Toyota Camry or Honda Accord is good...even used...Also, if you are looking for a new car, the Ford Focus is considered one of the best new models...

get a good used Honda Accord or Toyota Camry, those are about the most reliable cars on the market, as well as safe and pretty inexpensive to insure. find a used one in good shape within your price range.
