Among the subjects of the experiment were priests who had a very hard time accepting that they had been duped into harming others (or believing they were harming others) in response to authority.

The Milgram Experiment was used as an example of very, very bad experimental design when I was in college.

Well, God is an authority figure to religious people, and many of them will do horrible things if they think it is what God wants.
