The Father God spiritually quickened Simon Peter to this truth. It is essential in Christianity to be spiritually quicked by Father God to know that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the Living God.
Just read the chapter. Jesus told Peter that it was the Father God who gave Peter this revelation.

His brother brought him to Christ, but The Holy Spirit gave him the revelation that Jesus is The Christ, The Son of The Living God.

I believe that he found out when Jesus told him to fish at the deep end of the lake. When he dropped the net the net was filled with fish. Peter had spent the whole night fishing without catching a thing, so when Jesus performed the miracle he had to believe!
