I have heard people say that they will not be held accountable for tax fraud, if it is their accountant who is filing the fraudulent claim, ( and signing his own name as tax preparer) is this really true?

If your return has fraudulent information on it, YOU are liable unless you can prove that you had no knowledge of the fraud. Even then, the IRS will most likely hold you responsible and you would have to go after the preparer for the money.

YES! YES! YES! Even if you don't knowingly allow them to cheat you will be held accountable! Your taxes are your responsibility and yours alone. At least one of your signatures on your tax forms states that the information is true and correct to the best of your knowledge and releases your tax preparer from any repercussions from tax fraud. Which is a very serious offense. Even the smallest accident when filing can cost you way more than you are bargaining for. Do not try to screw with the government...they will make sure you never want to do it again if they catch you. Find A new accountant, and turn them in for making you vulnerable to the punishments you can receive for this stupidity!!!

Come on now, does that really make any sense to you?

No, it's not true - in any case, when something is inaccurate, whether you know about it or you don't, YOU are the one responsible when YOU sign your return. If the preparer knowingly cheats, they can also be held accountable for tax fraud, but YOU will be responsible for the errors on your own return, and any interest and penalties.

Yes you will be held accountable. You are responsible for your own taxes wether you prepare them or not. Case in point I have a friend in Fl that did this and he did not check what the preparer did. So after 3 years of this guy doing his taxes he had to pay back money to the IRS. So always check your taxes. There should be places around you where you can have them checked.

The IRS does not look at it that way. YOU must sign your own tax return before you send it in. It is YOUR responsibility to know what your accountant is doing.

If you have any indication your accountat is filing fraudlent tax returns the first place you should go is to your local IRS office.

Hate to say it, but YOU are utlimately responsible, even if your accountant makes an error.
Yes, some companies offer "insurance" in case this happens, but in the eyes of the IRS YOU and ONLY YOU are always responsible for your taxes, no matter who prepares them.

The accountant will have to suffer his consequences but you are also held responsible for your affairs. Just check with any true and legal accountant and they will tell you the same thing.

No, you are responsible for the information you provided to your accountant. You both can be held accountable.
