I have a G4 power mac with Tiger on it. When I boot it up I get an icon that has a globe and flashes, after a few minutes it flashes an icon back an forth with a file and the finder face. I was told that there is an error with a startup file. How do I fix this? Do I have to do a fresh install of Tiger or is there another way?

Christopher gave you the correct reason for the gobe icon but the solution is very easy. After you wait long enough to get past the globe icon, it will boot into the Mac OS. Then open System Preferences and choose "Startup Disk". Then select the folder "Mac OS X, 10.2.8 on hard drive". Quit System Preferences and tell it "Yes, I want to change the selection".

The icon with the globe means that your Mac is trying to do a network boot, this could be a sign of a hard drive failure. But it might not be, try this:

Place your Tiger install disk in the drive in and reboot.

Once you're passed the language page, go up to the top of the screen and click on the utilities menu, choose start up disk.

Hopefully you will see three icons, on will be the globe, which is network boot, one will be a icon of a CD or DVD, and the other will be an icon of a folder with the MacOSX X on the front of it, choose this one (if you don't see the folder icon with the X on it then your hard drive is probably dead, and you'll have to take it in to have a new one put in).

If successful then quit install and reboot and all should be well.

You might have better luck asking in the Tiger forums over at apple.com. The direct link is http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=160

Good luck!
