A Lot of Ex-Cops here on Yahoo Answers....But the Truth is that a Soldier is always trained to be a fighting machine in order to face enemies that are unknown.....On any Combat Grounds, they are fit to tackle their enemy irrespective of how short, tall, strong or cunning their enemy is. Police are those Department of the Government that are generally trained to enforce Law and Order on Civilian Grounds. Criminals are often tackled by Prison Guards or Special Unit of Cops that have full Intelligence Report on their moves and are aware of their tactics. Civilians could be disobedient but not fatal to the Police Officer. So the Truth is a Soldier knows better management for an Opponent and is both physically and mentally up for 'Do or Die' than any Police Officer.

Did you see the video of that cop vs. that big black jamaican dude that was undefeated in underground boxing (break.com)? The cop beat the crap outta him. Remember, being a cop is a job, not who they are. What they decide to do after the uniform is off will make them a better fighter. If you guys are talking about a cop has to abide by rules of force, then of course the soldier would win, but this is not the case.

It depends on what type of self-defense or martial arts training either have had. Most cops I know take either Jui-Jitsu, Karate, or Krav Maga because they deal with people face to face on a daily basis. Average soldiers on the other hand have a very brushed-up course on hand to hand combat training, and do not deal with criminals face to face on a daily basis, maybe only during times of war when/IF in combat. I am talking about an average soldier, not Special Forces, sniper, Seals, etc.

I would have to say a cop with the same training as an average soldier would win, because cops deal more with face to face situations with dangerous people on the street, and are more aware of their surroundings.

hmmm.... I'd say a police officer - especially if killing was forboden - That way the military officer might be a bit stuck! Both the military and the police force train their members with extreem fitness thingies - they have to work out really hard and they are both trained to defend themselves and most are trained in basic hand-hand combat ... It really would be an equal match I think - I'm mostly inclined to say police because I want to be one and I don't really like war - but really both are trained to extreems and the chances of winnign would depend on the individual I guess...

The real question is, who would win in a fist fight? - A caveman, or an astranought :P

Unless you already know how to fight, the hand to hand combat stuff they teach the average soldier can only get you killed if you apply it in real life. I was at army basic training , so this is not something I made up. Now if you are talking about elite soldiers like the Rangers, Green Berets, Marine Recon guys, Seals, etc. then there is no question about it, the average cop will lose big time.

cops r more experienced in the field and have to knock a punk out more often. if u r talkin S.W.A.T then they definately win both and not just once. swat officers have to work out constantly and anyone can join the army...but in the swat u have to b da best of the best. and not only that but swat officers have to kno how to do everything. negotiating, medical, sharpshooting, u name it.and every other week they have to train. and every month they have to complete power tests to stay in it. besides, u can take an army officer and a police officer both of the same age and find that the cop has plans to stay on the force for most of his life and the soldier will say that he will quit in a couple years. so 4 most the military isn't really a long-term career. therefore the cop will have more experience and training.

There is no way to accurately answer that question. There are too many factors to consider such as; training and experience one has had in life, mental attitude, and many others. I've seen 22 year old officers whom I could not depend on in a hostile situation and have seen 50 year-old officers who were short and wide in stature and could handle themselves quite well. If you are confronted by an attacker, you cannot allow your conscience, morals, or scruples to get in your way. A smart policeman can/will diffuse or neutralize a potentially dangerous situation before it gets out of hand. Use good sense. If you whip someone..,they will remember it longer than you will.

No weapons - soldier; they train for months to build up their strength and agility, I think they would have no problems taking out a police office in a fist fight.

Weapons - police officer; they use weapons more often than they don't.

I would win. I have been both. I would beat myself.

Thing, there is not such thing as an average soldier or an average cop.

Pit some headquarter's clerk-typist against a desk-bound detective, or pit a Special Forces member against a SWAT member.

Pit a female soldier against a male cop or vise versa.

But Superman could beat Batman.

You can't lump Marines in with the rest of the military, because Marines have a "kill school" which is three weeks hand to hand combat. Most likely based on what they are taught in training, probably the police would win. If weapons are involved, it would depend on range. Police would win with handguns, since most soldiers aren't trained in handguns, but if you are using various rifles, the soldier, since they qualify from 200 ft.
