Go Adopt from your nearest local Shelter!

Even better... adopt an unwanted! You know... the one everyone has passed up for 2 years because he's black and scraggly! He's always the best one!

Yay you! Go to your local animal shelter and start looking there. If you work often or just aren't home a lot an older cat is right for you. But if you have plenty of time ( and patience!) kittens are a blast. Once you find a cat that you really like, check their fur for any signs of fleas, such as little black grains that look like pepper. These are flea eggs! Also find out as much as you can about that cat in particular. Before you bring the cat home, cat proof your home. An easy way to do this is to lay on your back on the floor and see what things there are dangling, anything that would catch a cats eye that you either do not want them to get at or could be dangerous. Also, if you have any plants indoors or outdoors ( if you plan to let kitty roam) check that they are not poisonous to cats. You will also need to buy a litter box, some clumping litter( it makes cleanup much easier), appropriate cat food for your cat, a food/ water dish, a collar with a name tag (especially if kitty's going to go outside!) and some fun toys! Once your cat is home, he/ she may hide for a while, but that's normal. Or it may do what my cats did and just start playing with everything! Then at least once a year make sure your cat gets a check up and all required vaccines. It may sound like a lot of work, and it is at first, but once kitty is comfortable in your home, he/ she will be your best friend for life!!!

Short-haired cats leave less mess in the house and decide on a color of the cat that you'd like. Boys are much more rowdy than girls. The females are more affectionate. Unless you're gonna breed it, get it from the FREE KITTENS section in the newspaper. They need homes just as much.
