It means "reply." In other words, if you send someone an email and they answer/write back, they are replying.

In letters, Re: means regarding, or what the subject of the letter is. Also, just in case you're wondering, it's pronounced "ray."

If you reply to an email message, your email program probably inserts "Re: " in front of the original message subject automatically. This "Re:" is short for "Reply:" (or maybe "Response:").
"Re:" as "Regarding" or "In Re" is Redundant in Subject Lines

Contrary to other contexts, "Re:" does not mean "Regarding:" when used in email subjects.

Re: is just an abbreviation for "regarding". I use it everyday at work in interoffice memos.

It means "reply". So let's say you sent me an e-mail with the subject "Hi it's me!" and I sent you one back and the subject said, "RE:Hi it's me!", it just means that I replied to your e-mail.
