it depends on how you do the exercises! if you "burn" the muscles you will tone them! so rather do the exercises in sets of 25--30, 4-6 times with less weight than lots of weight in smaller sets (which will make you "grow"). **
Good luck!

Several factors to consider.

If you lift HEAVY weight, yes, you will bulk up. If you do light weight with high repetition, you will lose weight. Your body burns more calories rebuilding mucle then it does doing cardio because your body burns calories well after the workout is done. Doing cardio in conjuction with weight lifting will burn more calories and in turn lose additional weight. Changing your eating habbits from 3 big meals a day to 6 - 9 small meals a day will make your bodies matabolism work constantly and teach itself to stop storing the excess nutrients it doesn't need, which later turn into fat if not burned off. There are so many things you can do to trim down, you just need to pick what works for your body. Just don't go on some crazy diet and lose weight at an unsafe rate. You'll end up gaining it back anyhow. Fad diets work for the short term, but training your body to eat the right foods and help change your lifestyle are forever. Sorry if I got on a soapbox, just do what works for you and keep it healthy!

Weightlifting is important for a well rounded fitness program. You also need cardio and diet-a good food plan. Women have to REALLY work at it to bulk up. Even men do-they just don't have to work as hard. If you remember Survivor a couple of seasons ago with Rupert, there was a guy-I can't remember his name, so sorry (old age)-an African American with an absolutely beautiful body. He had beautiful muscles. Rupert looked soft and doughy, but he beat the hard body guy nearly every time.

You have to eat a special way, work out a special way, sleep a special way to get those bulky muscles. I've been lifting for about 12 years or so and I'm not bulky at all. (If you don't already know, I'm female.) I do heavy and fewer reps. I love it. I also do lots of cardio. They both help to burn fat.

So don't be afraid of weights. Don't give it a second thought. Just do what helps you. Lifting also tones, sculpts and gives you sexy shoulders, calves, thighs, arms, rear, etc. Weights are your friend! So is the treadmill, bike, and elliptical (my personal fav).

Exercise will drop some weight, but part two is diet. If you take in more food than you burn off, well you know. The good thing about exercise is your body keeps burning fuel long after you stopped. I don't know about "bulking up," if you got a layer of fat over your muscles you won't look ripped or cut. However, power lifters are very strong, most don't look like body builders. There is no easy way, you put weight on the same old way, you got to take it off the same old way. Sorry, no magic bullets (pills, creams, etc). Best of luck, you're heading down the right road. Hi,

Keep in mind it never hurts to have muscle. It may seem untractive to you if you are a girl. But, from a health perspective, its good to develop muscle.

It all depends on what type of weight lifting you do. If yo do heavy lifting and small reps....you bulk up. However, if you do light weights with a lot of reps, then you will get more toning.

Concentrate on what part of your body you are working on. When you're working out, try to feel the particular area you are concentrating on..ie stomach, legs, arms.

Good luck, it's good to lift weights, try to do it with a friend it's much funner that way.

Both, technically! You see my friend, depending on what program you utilize for a work - out program, you will; in fact; bulk up at the area(s) that you work. If it is a stomach mass that you are concerned with, I would suggest: squats. This is simply starting with a smaller amount of weights, press that amount over your head and pull your arms behind your head to place the weights upon your shoulders and begin to do your squats. I would also suggest that you start with only 5 or ten w/ sets of 3 to five depending upon how you feel. Move forward from there.

well you will get more muscle tone but to lose weight you need to do some cardio exercise to burn off calories, try running, jogging, trampolining, etc to lose weight and remember to be careful what you eat, if you want to lose weight try to only eat 1500 calories per day instead of the recommended 2000, and you should be fine, good luck with the weight loss, honey!

Yes it wont slim you down and might slightly bulk you up, the seacret to a muscled tonned slim body is alot of cardio to burn fat and weights training to tone the muscles. a mixture of both will make you lose fat and help you look great. Bruce Lee got his muscular slim body not out of genetics but out of healthy eating (low fat) alot of cardio and alot of weights training.

It's hard to predict. Sometimes firming the muscle which is below the fat can actually make the fat more obvious. Don't do weights to improve your appearance. Do weights because it is good for your health. ..and when you can lose the weight because it's the best thing you can do for your health besides exercise.
