POLLY,

THE PROBLEM WITH DOING AN INLAY ON A TOOTH THAT HAD A PREVIOUS ROOT CANAL IS THAT AN INLAY WILL NOT PROTECT THE CUSPS FROM POTENTIAL FUTURE BREAKING.
WHEN YOU DO A ROOT CANAL THE TOOTH STARTS TO SLOWLY BECOME BRITTLE. SO THEN IT'S ONLY A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE PART OF THE TOOTH WILL BREAK.. A CROWN COMPLETELY PROTECTS ALL PARTS OF THE TOOTH.
THE PROCEDURE INVOLVES DRILLING INTO THE TOP OF THE TOOTH IN ORDER TO PREPARE THE PROPER FORM FOR THE INLAY. THEN AN IMPRESSION IS TAKEN OF THE PREPARED TOOTH, AND A TEMPORARY FILLING MATERIAL IS PUT IN.

Dr Albert is right on this one. When a rootcanal is done, it removes the blood supply from the tooth. Over time, the tooth will become brittle. An inlay doesn't protect the cusps of the tooth, therefore over time, as the tooth gets more brittle, it is very likely that the tooth will break. A full coverage crown would be the best solution.

Inlays? the tooth was killed when you had the root canal. It's dead and disintegrating in your mouth. The crown is there to hold it together. It will just disintegrate with time, so make sure you have a good dentist who will make the crown hold. Gold can be used to take less of the tooth, but it's expensive. So, to hold the tooth, your sacrificing some more tooth, but it will be held together as it disintegrates.
