Yesterday I had shooting pains down the one leg. By the end of the day, I feel way better and have no trouble working out. My mattress and sleeping positions have not changed. Maybe I am stressed when I sleep?

Muscle stiffness or rigidity is caused either by nerve impulses causing the muscles to contract, injured or overworked muscles, or electrolyte imbalances that do not allow the muscles to fully relax. Its possible that you have some type of sleep disorder where your motor neurons are not shutting down during sleep, but it makes sense to test for the electrolyte problem first.

You can figure out If the problem is caused by an electrolyte imbalance by taking a magnesium supplement in the morning and at bedtime (one 250-300mg pill each time). Potassium does not help muscles relax - it is needed for muscles to contract; magnesium is needed for muscles to relax. If electrolytes are the cause, you will see results by the second day. Otherwise, if the problem is still there after taking magnesium, then electrolytes are not causing the problem, and you probably need visit with a doc to find the cause.
