Never too late. But in fact I don't think it is so much becoming a witch as acknowledging that you already are one.

Wicca is a nature religion, to the extent the word "religion" applies at all. If you believe in Mother Earth, you feel drawn to a natural, organic concept of spirit, and do not feel frightened by the hype about witches being evil, you can learn what you need to know.

I hesitate to send you to books, because so many of them are just another way to make money for the author. But a careful review of a metaphysical bookstore (New Age may be the term used), or the metaphysical section of the local general bookstore will probably yield something of value for you. Much depends on what you believe a witch is, really. Look for "Drawing Down the Moon," which is sort of old but pretty good.

While you are in the bookstore, see if there is a bulletin board which might yield up an introductory course or lecture or gathering. And buy yourself a deck of Tarot cards to begin the process of learning the symbols and concepts that guide many witches.

Wicca is very individualistic. What do you want to learn?

It's never too late, but sometimes it is too early.

As some other people have mentioned, being a Witch can be different from being a Wiccan. So my first question and what you should be asking yourself is: which is it that I am interested in? Are you looking to change or develop a religious affiliation, or are you just interested in magic?

If you don't know the answers to these questions yet, it is too early. You need to read up on what you are talking about before you can make any decisions.

If it is the religious change you are looking for, also consider that there are many other neo-pagan religions besides Wicca, and you don't HAVE to choose any one, you can do your own thing... but you should study everything you can and do a lot of meditation and self-discovery so that you know what YOU believe.

I wonder if some people can get it through their thick skulls that not all witches are Wiccan! But all Wiccans are witches.

It is never to late to follow your chosen path.
But first I have a couple of questions for you to really ponder.
1. Why do you want to practice witchcraft?
2. What lead you to this path?
3. What do you expect to gain from it?

If your answer to ANY of these questions is "power", forget it.

READ!!! Find out which denomination you would prefer. You may find your answer in, Buckland's Complete Book of Witchcraft.

I would not bother with any type of initiation or gathering of ritual tools until you find which path you are going to follow. Most things that have been mentioned are not necessary in all denominations. I have much more than has been listed, but then, I have been practicing for a very long time. My particular path essentially needs only a Staff, Dirk (athame) and a Keek-Stane (or crystal ball). Other tools can be acquired as needed.

I am Pecti-Witan (aka Hedge Witch, not Wiccan) a "solitary" practitioner of "the Old Religion", and have been for many, many years. Being a "Witch" is nothing like what is portrayed in movies or on Television. There is nothing flashy about it. we are fairly simple people with "abilities" that everyone has, ours are just honed and utilized. Lots of research and practice. There is a lot to learn when you are dealing with herbal, mineral and candle magick.
I read tarot cards, rune stones and utilize a number of other tools for divination but would NEVER charge anyone for anything I do! Besides, I do not do "readings" or "cast spells" for others on demand. That sounds more like a con game to me!
Now as for what I did to start, well, it seemed to come naturally to me, (my mother was a witch and my great grandmother was the daughter of a Comanche medicine man) and I believe this is not my first life (nor the last) as a witch. I have always had a deep respect for nature and have an innate ability to communicate with animals. When I was very young my parents encouraged me to learn about all religions, so I did. And I encourage you to do the same to find your true path. Books are an excellent source, providing you get the right ones, there are some I would avoid (Ravenwolf). I prefer Scott Cunningham. If you can connect with other practitioners that would also be a good way to learn. One question you must ask yourself is are you looking for the structured system of a Coven or would you prefer the life as a "Solitary"? Buckland has some very good books outlining both. But my favorite book is still "Wicca, a Guide for the Solitary Practitoner". It is a good place to start (or affirm).
As you have probably noticed, you also have to have a thick skin, because even in this "advanced" civilization there are still those who believe we worship the devil (LMAO), and would rather turn a blind eye to the world around them. Some will even admit that they think we should be burned at the stake! Ignorance knows no bounds. Expect people to tell you that you are going to Hell. You will probably lose friends. Just being honest with you.
I hope you find the answers you were looking for.

You can become a witch at any age, some are born, some are made. I better say for the record, being a witch is not the same as being a wIccan, just as being a pagan isn't the same as being a witch.

As with anything not mainstream, be prepared to be derided and made fun of by people who do not and/or will not understand why you choose to become one.

I would suggest reading up on Paganism and Witchcraft by both pagan and non-pagan authors, that way you can see it from both sides.

Feel free to e-mail those who are pagans and ask questions.

You might want to avoid me though, I'm a grumpy, bitter, old guy (grin).

Spiritual exploration can do you good at any age, if it leads you to becoming Wiccan or Pagan, or if the exploration of those ideas only gives you a foundation to go on to further explorations. Study well, and with dedication, learn a good foundation and ethic before you go on to the parts that some newbies consider to be more "glamorous".
( Could someone please explain to me when it was that 24 came to be "old" ??? LOL)

There is a difference between "witch" and practicing Wicca. There is no age limit on beliefs. Just have to find "which" you prefer to follow.

Umm, sweety, you realize there's no such thing as too old to become a witch, right? It's like saying you're too old to be christian. I've known several people who come to this path much later in life than you are now. Find a good teacher and have no worries over silly things like age.

I am 37 and just recently converted to Paganism. So, I think your ok there!

I started out with a book called "The Solitary Witch". It was recommended by several friends who are Wiccan/Pagan.

Good luck and blessings be!

Would you like to learn how to do the broom thing? It's easy for Super Girl of course but I can tell you how real witches do it.
