Capacitance is the ability of an object to store an electrical charge. The capacitance of the object can also change as it changes shape or location. As it relates to ESD, an object can release its electrical energy via an ESD spark when its capacitance suddenly drops. For example, a common poly bag sitting on a bench may hold only a few hundred volts of ESD charge, but when picked up by an operator, the decrease in capacitance can increase the voltage to several thousand volts - enough to produce a spark

When P-type and N-type semiconductors are joined together the electrons in the N-type immediately cross over the junction to fill in the 'holes' in the P-type material. This happens without any circuit connection, or without any external voltage applied to the junction. This neutral area in the middle has most of the same properties of the intrinsic semiconductor (before it was doped).

What you end up with in this PN junction is is a sandwich of P-type material on one end, an area of neutrality equivalent to the intrinsic (non-doped) semiconductor, and the other end-cap of N-type material. More simply: you have a semiconductor layer, a semi-insulator layer, and a semiconductor layer. That sounds like a capacitor. It is a capacitor.

The "layers" are not perfectly defined, more like a Gaussian distribution, but it is possible to determine a true and exact capacitance for a given PN junction (based on size, material, etc.) The math is standard in several EE textbooks on semiconductors.

Gett a older copy of the ARRL handbook (amatuer radio) it has a well written section on the various parameters in radio and electronics in general. overall stray capacitence happens due to spacing of parts ans items in a circuit package. not always a problem depending on what your doing.
