a few christians have invited me to debate religion via email. but it seems that once they realize they can't convert me they accuse me of being cruel for engaging in honest, open debate.

don't they get enough validation in the real world, where in the U.S. something like 85% of the population agrees with them?

Because the New Testament never describes what to do if Christianity actually succeeds.

They're trapped in a mindset that they are the outsiders and the vast evil empire of the world is persecuting them.

They didn't get the memo that explained that they had actually BECOME the thing that the early Christians hated and fought against.

Actually, while Christianity probably does have a majority (at least nominally) in America, I'm not convinced it does throughout the world. And no matter how big, if you are told that you are supposed to convert the whole world, 85% is not good enough. They are not ALLOWED to give up!

I wouldn't like getting e-mails like that either. Just report them if you don't like it to block the communication. Or do you enjoy it?

Your question: Christians have always been persecuted worldwide for centuries and always will be. It is not a "complex". It's fulfilled prophesy. I don't mean persecution in the Western World of the 20th - 21st Centuries. It is only just beginning here. So.. if Christians are afraid, there is pretty good reason for it.

They are persecuted and it is usually by a minority.

91% of America believes in a God, 3% are Atheists, kinda makes you wonder whose the ones that are delusional?

Perhaps it is down to a difference of expectations.

As long as your debate is honest and open without being scathing and derogatory, you have a point.

I can only speak for Christians, and there is persecution going on as we speak in other countries than the USA. We get pictures and stories all the time from different respected organizations. The ultra liberal media in the USA will not cover the stories.

It's minority sects of the majority religion. Their doctrines are incompatible with reality and you "persecute" them by pointing it out. Their religion is an invitation to "persecution".

Hasn't our society and culture always loved the underdog story?

It's because their faith is so weak. Anyone who was confident in their views wouldn't be disturbed by other people having different beliefs or challenging theirs - In fact they would enjoy the debate, as I do.

I agree with Icarus. Moreover if a person talks to you only because he wants to convert you, it is not very nice.
