I have a question... I have two dogs (both rescued from the pound). Both are given heart worm and flee/tick meds as well as all but one of their shots together and on a regular basis. Here is my problem. They were adopted at different times of the year so Bella, the oldest, gets her Rabies shot in December and Heidi gets hers in May. When I called the vet and asked if I could somehow get them on the same schedule I was told to just wait until May and get both of them done then, not before. Does that sound right? Can Heidi get her shot a month early or will it hurt her?

Anyway, I am worried that if Bella gets out she might be quarantined or put down. (99% of the time she is passive - unless she is cornered or thinks Heidi or the family are being threatened - then all 20 lbs of her thinks she is Napoleon or something.) We are also moving at the end of the month which adds to my worry that she might get out...

Thanks for the help!

Get the other one her shots early. You don’t want the other one to be unprotected.

Rabies photos are available in diverse strengths. they might desire to get carry of their first shot at approximately 15 weeks of age and then each year photos after that. on an identical time as the preliminary injection is regularly the 12 months dosage, you are able to elect the 2nd and next injections to be the three year photos. They value slightly extra, yet you do not might desire to concern approximately risk-free practices for 3 years. the drawback to getting the three year shot is that maximum communities have rules that canines get carry of a team of preventive injections (distemper, hepatitis, etc.) to boot to the rabies vaccination. the different sequence of injections are purely accessible in one year dosages and are regularly given on an identical time because of the fact the rabies vaccine, so which you're actually not saving your self a visit to the vet by using having the three year dose. additionally, quite a few vets grant a equipment cost on the 12 months injections which includes the rabies vaccine.

Your one dog getting her shot early won't hurt the dog at all. It's what shelter's do when they have a stray dog that no one claims. The dog may have been vaccinated earlier that year, but they will do it anyway because they have no way of knowing for sure unless it has a rabies tag.

Have you talked to your vet about going every 3 years for the rabies vaccination? I don't know if all states allow this now, but it's worth asking.

Get them to the point neither is due for rabies for another 3 years- then, have BOTH done when the first is due again- having the 2nd dog have it's 3 yr. rabies a few months earlier should be just fine. Why not talk to your vet about your concerns about the timing for Bella? If he tells you 'it's fine', ask him to put it in writing for you. BTW, they can't just 'put down' your dog, unless it exhibits signs of rabies- they would have to quarantine her. Not fun for either of you, but not an instant death sentence.

In order to get them on the same sched. will take longer then a year...do NOT go over 30 days after vaccine due date especially since the vaccinations are only needed every 3 years.

You can vaccinate Heidi early, but it isn't recommended to do it 6 months early if it can be avoided.

I experienced the same dilemma with my three dogs. All were on a different rabies schedule until last September. Now they all get their rabies vaccination in September. I noticed that although their tag says it expires in one year, on the rabies receipt, the vaccine that they are given is a three year vaccine. So, a few months one way or the other shouldn't really hurt.

My youngest got two rabies vaccines in one year to get him on schedule with the older two; and the middle one got his three months later than usual to get him on schedule with the other two.

Yes, she can get her shot early and you don't have to be concerned. According to my sister (who works at a vet's office) all rabies shots are the same (including the one's given to puppies). We just gave our 14 year old sheltie her rabies shot a month early, and she's just fine. :)

its ok to get the shot earlier. it wont hurt. And if you are not confident 100 percent your dog will not get out, then you need to take her to a trainer and figure a way she can be 100% trustworthy. You need to work with her to make sure she doesnt 'get out' whatever that means. Dogs are only aggressive because people make them that way. They usually give warning growls, and its your responsbility to keep her under control and leashed at all times she is outside. if she runs out of the house, you need to train her to not bolt for the door. there are lots of books out there. just work with her.
