I do not want to get a cheap carpet. Is $30 a sq yard above average or expensive?

Decent carpet runs $25-$35/sy installed with pad. Expensive carpet is closer to $40-45.

Carpet in the $15-20 range is cheap carpet with a lifespan of 5-7 years.

Things to look for in the $30 range: You want a "Solution dyed nylon" carpet. This has the best wear and is nearly stain proof. Solution dyed nylon can be cleaned with a 50-50 bleach water solution without harming the fiber at all. Hollytex and WundaWeve both make great products in this price range. These products will have a lifespan of 10-15 years or more with proper care.

You get what you pay for in flooring. No question.

If you tell me the manufacturer and style, I can tell you if you are getting ripped off.

I think average is about $15 to $20 per sq yd. I did pay a little more for the carpeting upstairs than I did downstairs, because I knew I'd replace the downstairs carpet sooner. I picked out a $25/sq yd carpet for upstairs, and I thought that was expensive. I think $30 is WAY too expensive.

$30 seems high to me but it may be a superior carpet. Think about the padding also. Even a cheaper carpet will feel plush with the more expensive padding under it.
