Bounds is correct about this. No one knows if it would be possible or not. Frankly, Im not sure the M1 would penitrate the hide. Think of it like an elephant. M1 vs Elephant = Elephant kills you your guide and your Range Rover, only to rest and recover from the 8 rounds you threw at him ! The T-Rex would have towered over an elephant in every way. Im guessing but Im sure their hide was built to take the teeth of other T-rex's. That being said, Im not sure a .458 Lott Mag would do the job, but I would much rather have that instead of an M1. My guess is no. Some illegally take elephants with AK's, It usually takes 15-20 rounds to get the animal to fall after running for a half mile. Do you think a M1 would take the T-rex ?

D58, I hate to bring this up but I read your post and wondered why I had never seen that giant elephant you speak of. The African elephent that your speaking of is 2-3 meters tall at best. Thats less than half the hieght of the T-Rex as far as we know. They also weigh in at about 2-4 tonnes which again is about half that of the T-Rex. Their skin is also light with mostly body mass in the way of a killing shot. As far as we know the T-Rex had Gator like skin that would be armor if you will.

Your correct about Bell however, given the fact that he always had a 2 riflemen backup party with real guns for the job, even he knew that you only get one chance at that beast ! Even Fred Bear has killed a polar bear in record standings from 15 yards away with a recurve bow. No one ever says anything about the 2 shots fired from the guide to down the animal imediately after the arrow hit ! An elephant is a gental animal in since. Yes they are strong and they can do some damage when harmed, but I dont think we can class the African legend with a T-rex which was ment to be a predator and a hunter itself. Given the info, I would say at best the T-Rex would have finished eating you before a 30.06 ever took effect on him. I think you would have a better chance of out smarting him into a hole to be honest !

To this date the most forceful caliber I know of for the largest elephants is a 700 Nitro Express. This gun in all its glory as the heavy hitter of Africa will not drop an elephant dead cold. I would want the 700 if I assumed there was any chance aginst a T-Rex ! Well placed shots only come when your calm and expecting. Is there anyone here who would be calm in the general area of the most feared animal that has ever lived ?

****Easy there D58, when i made that post the link was not there or I did not see it. Now harm was ment by my post thus no reason for you to take offence. On top of that it is also taken from wiki, which we all know is full of false info. The elephant you speak of would be a world record and not common at all. I dont see the need for you to get attitude about something I was questioning. You showed your resource therefore I now know where this came from.

BTW, I never claimed to be a Safari expert as you say, I have hunted in Africa on safari for 12 years now and have seen my fair share of these animals. Like I said, to a normal shooter, a 30.06 will not take an elephant. 12 years hunting, not 12 years expert, all you have to do is read remember ! I didnt just add that below either, it was there the whole time. Thank you for clearing up where your info was retrieved, I assure you it is not practical at all.

Walter. Bell (Karamojo Bell) Professional Ivory Hunter early 1900 was reported to have killed
1,011 Bull Elephants using either a .303,.275 or as small as .256 caliber solids.
With the majority being 1 shot kills to the brain.
Reference from: Peter Hathaway Capstick book Death in the Silent Places.

Tyrannosaurus rex was one of the largest land carnivores of all time, about 12 to 13 meters (40 to 43.3 feet) long, and 4.5-5 m (14-16.6 ft) tall, up to 7.5 tons in weight. when fully-grown
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tyrannosaurus_rex

Savanna Elephant, the largest of all elephants. In fact, it is the largest land animal in the world, standing up to 4 m (13 ft) at the shoulder and weighing approximately 7,000 kg (7.7 tons).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elephant

Now if a .303 Brit with solids bullets can blow through an elephants skull and brain him I would bet a 30-06 AP would put T-Rex right back on the Endanger Species List.

T-Rex is just a couple feet taller and a few pounds lighter then the African Elephant and both will kill you if given the chance.

You catch one and bring him back (Buck Only) I would jump at the chance to hunt him with a 30-06 AP or solids, and I would use my Encore.

It referred to as GUN CONTROLE, placing the bullet in the right spot.
There are people out there who cant kill a white tail deer with a 458 Mag.
I imagine if their a bad enough shot they could wound a hamster with a 50 BMG.

But like I said you catch him I’ll kill him with the 30-06 TC Encore.

It’s time to Cowboy Up.

MRS the link that the insert was removed from is right under it all you have to do is read it!
You cant find a link that under the insert, and you ask me why you cant find an elephant!
You’re the one claiming 12 years Safari Expert, get out of the bar and in to the bush.
And most elephant hunters have back up shooters,
Any thing else ?

Bound's hubby here:

Anything is possible. Anyone that has hunted before knows that living creatures live in the forward third (shoulder/chest) area of their body. A heart or lung shot should drop anything.

What we do not have from history is the thickness and density of a T-rex's hide/skin, so that would be the unknown variable.

Good luck!

Basic if it bleeds you can kill it.

Bounds is right though. the skin thing is a big factor. Thats like natural Kevlar to the nth degree.

The most practical is to shoot both knees with elephant loads or your .50 cal and finish him off when he's down and immobilized. A T-Rex is a big animal but its balance is quite unstable.

The knees or the ankle joints would be the weakness.

How do we cook it? I wonder

Happy hunting.

Probably...there is a theory called " Moving the Zoo"> Within your own environment you have become immune to all the diseases etc,,,over the years and wherever you go you take your little zoo of bugs with you. If you move you can become affected by the germs of other groups who have their own local immunity. The obvious test of this is the cold or feeling unwell when you visit friends outside your immediate group at holiday times. It was once reckoned that if you moved back to the dinosaur age...even the huge fleas that lived on the reptiles would be big enough to cause you grievous harm.

We'll never know, Scotty, but my best guess is... Sure. With eight solid .30-06 bullets I'm sure a good rifleman could drop a T-Rex within reasonable range. I'd try for a disabling neck shot followed by head or heart-shots.

Have you ever gone to the museum and seen a t-rex skeleton? You are not gonna penetrate that skull. I would use a 50 cal or 20mm. Nothing less. You need an instant kill cause anything longer and it will kill you too.

Just remember to stand still so it won't see you and no I doubt your m-1 would kill it and deffinatly not the skull go for something more open like the rib cage, least then you'd have a chance of missing bone and getting vitals.

You would have to hit it with two
shots, one in each eye, and then
finish it off with the other six. That
would probably give you time to
get away, but it would be a while
before it would die.

An M-1 won't do the job unless you're accurate enough to hit an eye direct. Then you have four more rounds to do the job.

I'd suggest an RPG (rocket-propelled grenade)
