As a person who has seen SIX decades of life...let me throw this one at you: During the Viet Nam war as long as there was "just the draft" many rich and or politically connected kids could get deferrments. Howevwer, when they came up with a "draft lottery" that would include NO Deferments....many young people and their parents protested the war and ultimately suceeded in beng influential in pulling our troops out of Nam.
IF there were a draft, lawmakers will make sure there will be no deferments. Therefore, trust and believe that this war will be over in a HURRY if the draft was to be reinstated.

1. This war is only similar to Vietnam in the most base, simplest way. The casualties aren't even close. The stupidity in our leaders is a fraction of what it was during Vietnam. The Military leaders all through the ranks are levels above what they were during Vietnam. And the soldiers who are there are motivated way beyond what the drafties we sent to Vietnam where.
2. I think most young Americans are ambivalent about Iraq because their parents are. Sure they have opinions but they aren't educated opinions and they don't do anything about them but talk. They take no action.
3. If there were a draft, it would swing everyones opinion against the war. Plus it would give us soldiers to work with who are more of drag then they are worth.

We all notice but just like the people of Iraq we still need to try and lead a half way normal life or we will go crazy. No, I do not think it would be different if there was a draft.

If there is a draft, I think people would be angrier about Iraq. Imagine trying to force the anti-war people to serve in the very war they're protesting? Most people don't want to serve their country, that's why the US and Canada is having such a problem with numbers. It would be a total uproar. If this happens, please convince the Canadians to shut their borders. I don't want to harbor thousands of deserters.

Because during vietnam there was a draft. That meant everybody had to pay attention. Boys were concerned about being drafted, while wives mothers and girlfriends worried about their loved ones. Currently people see it as not there problem as long as it does not affect them. I dont know whats better. A draft would be bad, but the inability to care is also bad...

Yeah this war is so similar to Nam to everyone but those of us who served in Nam. I think right now with the mentality of todays's youth if the President reinstated the draft the only thing that would rise would be the suicide rate in American teens!

I agree whole heartedly. There are enormous parrallels, except for the draft. It was interesting that Bosnia and the humanitarian effort there was criticized for being to close to Vietnam for comfort. What the heck is the Iraq war?

So you wish there was a draft so there could be riots followed by a humiliating defeat?
You folks just keep playing with your cell-phones, iPods, and blackberries while the rough men willing to do violence on your behalf complete the job.

if they made a draft, my *** would move to canada. No one should be forced to fight in a war. The mind warping recruiters that promise money and college funds for young high school grads is bad enough.
