I have loved ones with both ... basically depression, and very difficult to deal with.

Borderline Personality Disorder

Relationships with others are intense and unstable, swinging wildly from love to hate and back again. People with BPD will engage in frantic efforts to avoid real or imagined abandonment
They also have uncertainties about their identity or self-image. The tend to see things in terms of extremes, either all good or all bad. Such people also typically view themselves as victims of circumstances and take little responsibility for themselves or their problems.
Frequent displays of inappropriate anger
Recurrent acts of crisis such as wrist cutting, overdosing, or self-mutiliation
Feelings of emptiness and boredom
Intoleranfe of being alone
Impulsiveness with money, substance abuse, sexual relationships, binge eating, or shoplifting
Drug Abuse
Suicide Attempts
Eating Disorders
Depression

BiPolar Disorder (Manic Depressive)

Discrete periods of mania alternating with depresssion. Often times appear to have depression rather than bipolar disorder.

Loss of self-esteem
withdrawal
feelings of helplessness and worthlessness
excessive or inappropriate guilt
fatigue - lasting for weeks or months
overwhelming sluggishness
persistent daytime sleepiness
insomnia
difficulty concentrating
difficulty making decisions
loss of appetite
weight loss
abnormal thoughts of death
thoughts about suicide
diminished interest in daily activities
diminished pleasure in activities
In the Manic Phase:
elevated mood
increase in goal-directed activities
flight of ideas or racing thoughts
inflated self-esteem
decreased need for sleep
agitation
more talkative than usual
extreme restlessness
weight gain
poor temper control
excessively irresponsible behavior
increased sexual activity
delusions - false beliefs
hallucinations

rapid cycling bipolar is a lot like borderline personality disorder in the fact that the persons moods can swing very fast from one end of the pole to the other.

look up the NIMH it will tell you the symptoms of both these disorders and may help you understand it more.
