So in other words: "Can't we all just... get along?"
I guess the easy way to answer is this:
If we can put our cultural/religious differences aside and look to WHO a person is rather than WHAT they believe, then the world would be a better place.

But see...that is a rose colored glasses approach. Underneath our differences, I don't believe many other people are good. I believe the majority spend their day driven by hate and attempting to make others feel worse about themselves. All the time you see these people who were picked on in high school and have spent 10 yrs waiting for the reunion to be able to "get back at that person". I just had a person IM me today that I haven't talked to in years tell me that my dating this guy she liked ruined her whole life. I don't even recall dating that guy. I was impressed that she waited 10 yrs (well 8 anyway) to be able to get that off her chest. As for the same needs, just that whole "have to get to survive" bit. Nothing more. And take away that food to survive and you'd see how animalistically alike we really are. Until something happens that forces us all to be together, the differences are just too insurmountable.

At one time in mankinds infancy we all spoke the same Language & Lived in the same area. We did the same things and aligned ourslves together for a common goal. That goal was to build a Zigurat (spiral building) up to God in Heaven so we could be as God! This was mankinds Arrogance Complex that God fixed by "confounding" mans speach so that further work at a common goal was stopped. This led to people "clumping" together in groups forming new communities around the world. Today under the "Rodney King Factor" (can't we all just get along) Socialism (Communisim) is alive & well!!! God gave mankind "Free Will" to choose their own actions. Along with this came "Responsibility" which everyone avoids like the "Plague"!!! If we accept the "Responsibility Factor" as we should, the "Group" WILL be cared for! BUT (BIG BUT), we are widley known as the ME, ME, ME generation who acceptes NO RSPONSIBILITY and lives ONLY FOR THEIR MOMENTARY GRATIFICATION AT OTHERS EXPENSE!!! I wish it wasn't so, but it is. Hope this sheds some light on a good question. John

I agree that we atheists and Christians should be working toward consensus and seek common ground where ever we find it. That's the proper way for human beings to live together peacefully. Unfortunately, people who imagine that their own conscious perceptions are actually reality are philosophically incapable of understanding much more than their own superstitions.

Groupthink? Boy is that a scary idea! Part of the trouble, of course, is who gets to decide what's right for the group and on what basis?
Google groupthink - it's enlightning!

We live in an individualistic culture rather than a collectivist culture. That means we focus more on individuality.

If you go with a figurative interpretation then you make it say whatever you want.
Pretty cool, huh?
