That's really hard to say - it depends on your body and your existing metabolic rate, and your existing activity level. Although B-12 is water soluble, its never a great idea to take too many times the Recommended Daily Value. Please don't expect that taking B-12 is going to have you popping out of bed in the morning just bursting with energy - it will work rather unobtrusively, in the sense that you'll realize after the fact, that you've used stamina that you didn't know you had. Ultimately, however, only a certain amount can even be quickly absorbed in the body - that doesn't mean your body will self-regulate toxicity, so don't depend on it for that! - but since it is water soluble, a significant portion of the vitamin in the pill you take will wash out of your body (unused) in your urine.
I think the safest bet is to find a formulation (I'd recommend that you take balanced vitamins, rather than just B-12) that has levels that are safe, but still provide your desired increase, and work with that. Increasing your activity level along with your B-12 level will give you the best results.

To increase metabolism, always eat breakfast in the morning. Break-fast...break the fast. Don't skip breakfast. If you wait until mid morning or afternoon to eat, your metabolism will run slower. Think of breakfast as adding logs to the fireplace. Your metabolism is the fireplace and logs are the breakfast.
Increase metabolism by eating smaller meals through the day. Eat 4 to 6 six small meals, 2 to 3 hours apart.

a elevated B12 intake does not increase the metabolic rate above normal however a deficiency of B12 will not allow the metabolism to function normally.

Just a couple of tips.
1) Eat breakfast
2) Drink plenty of water - if you are dehydrated your metabolism can slow up to 30%
3) Take good vitamins. If you take the cheaper ones EG Centrum, they are more water soluble. Go to a nutrition store such as GNC and ask them or consult your Dr.

taking vitamins alone will not speed your metabolism. no matter how many manufacturers tell you so... they just want to sell their product. vitamins are good as a (temporary) nutritional substitute, but for true metabolic heightening you must choose better diet and add activity to your daily routine.
