About Creation, Pope Melds Faith With Science

By IAN FISHER
Published: April 12, 2007
ROME, April 11 — Science cannot fully explain the mystery of creation, Pope Benedict XVI said in comments about evolution that were published in a book on Wednesday. At the same time, he did not reject evolutionary theory or endorse any alternative for the origins of life.
“I would not depend on faith alone to explain the whole picture,” Benedict, a former theology professor, told his former students in September at a private seminar outside Rome on evolution, according to an account of the book from Reuters.

What is wrong with depending on faith alone?

The Pope has stated a nice, mushy, middle-of-the-road, sitting-on-the-fence position that is held by millions of Christians all over the world. Cheers and hooray.

See Rev. 3:16 for God's opinion on the matter.

It's not news. It was news when John Paul II said that Charles Darwin's theories on evolution were sound, as long as they took into account that creation was the work of God, and that Darwin's theory of evolution was "more than a hypothesis". This is just a call not to replace religion with science. One version of the doctrine of Creationism is very simple: "God created the universe."

Scuba Dude, your answer shows your ignorance. Faith is not just saying I believe and thats it. Many people say they are Christians, but are still not going to heaven. Faith means convicting yourself and is a lifetime development process. People that say they are Christians, but still cheat on their spouses, do drugs and commit crimes don't have much faith. In order to convict yourself and make a strong commitment of sorts means you have to have an understanding of what you're getting involved in. Everyone displays some sort of faith at some point in time. When you get on the freeway, you have faith your car will get you where you want to be, when you get on an elevator, you have faith the cable won't break, etc. Even though people get killed on the highway everyday and elevators cables have broken in the past, you have faith that it won't happen to you.

The problem with most of the responders to this question is that they don't seem to understand the true meaning of faith. Real faith does require study, (John 17:3) thinking (Proverbs 1:1-4) reasoning (Romans 12:1, Acts 17:2,3), understanding (Proverbs 4:7) It is not just blindly believing something that has no basis. Hebrews 11:1 defines faith as "the assured expectation of things hoped for, the evident demonstration of realities though not beheld." Note that faith is assured, evident, and real.
It is sad that a religious leader is so befuddled by such a basic Bible teaching, that he can offer nothing more vague allusions to his flock.

"What is wrong with depending on faith alone?"

This isn't the kind of thing that faith alone can solve. Having faith in modern medicine is okay for example but having faith in God to heal your septic apendicitis is madness.

Depending on faith is good... the problem is if people have faith and they don't understand their own religion to be able to be 100% convinced it is the truth.

They just close their eyes and run... untill they crash

My opinion? Nobody, and I mean nobody except Godhisownself, is going to solve this dilemma. You can't trust in faith alone, and you can't trust to science alone. Find a middle ground and focus on things we can do something about, like poverty or hunger or Republicans, bad things like that.

what if 'The Big Bang' theory was creation? what if god ordered it to create his universe and then from there let the chips fall where they may. its just an idea, but encorporates both sides of the argument really.

I believe in god, but the bibles reasoning behind creation is kind of unbelievable. My theory is God began the cycle of evolution. The best of both worlds. =)
