The baptism will be in Tuxtla, Mexico at a church. As their godmother, I understand I will have to go to three meetings before the baptism. Will the priest perform the baptism (and involve me) if I am not Catholic? What other traditions should I be aware of before I go down there?

A bit. You cannot be a godparent but you can be an official witness.

Actually only one Godparent is necessary. You can have one godfather, one godmother, or one of each.

The role of the godfather and/or godmother is very important. They must be firm Catholic believers, able and ready to help the newly baptized—child or adult—on the road of Christian life.

To ensure this, a godparent must be at least 16 years old (for maturity's sake), fully initiated (having received Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist), be someone other than the legal parents, and one who leads a life in harmony with the Church.

If you have only one Catholic godparent, then you may have a non-Catholic participate as an official witness. The witness will be responsible for setting a good example for the baptized person while the Catholic godparent will share the specifics of the Catholic faith.

With love in Christ.

Baptism is a religious rite in the Catholic church. That means the priest will sprinkle the baby. He will ask you some questions about things and the meetings will determine if the priest believe you are the right person for the job. Being a Godparent in a big responsibility.

You know in these modern times almost anything goes and the Priest may well carry out the Baptism, but in former times you would have to have been a Catholic to stand for these children as their Godmother, but if possible ring the Priest to really know where you stand.

To attend the baptism celebration is alright but to be their godmother - you must be a catholic. You may as well get instructed in the catholic faith first before becoming their godmother. Then, ask to be baptized in the Catholic Church. A godmother's responsibility is serious - that is to be able to follow up the 'infant faith' of the newly baptized.

The priest baptizes the child, while the Godparents usually holds the child but it might be the parents depends on the local custom. However, you can't be a godparent because in the ceremony you promise that the child will be raised Catholic in the event anything happens to their parents. You also make vows regarding supporting their faith and if your not Catholic you couldn't keep those vows either. Whoever told you you could be a Godparents isn't thinking straight you better talk to a local Catholic priest maybe he can figure out what is going on in that parish in Mexico. If you went to the first meeting of Godparents they would ask you if your a practicing Catholic.

Godmother knows best and just keep away from the rattlesnakes and coyotes and drink plenty of spirits before and after the christening. Don't forget to slip the priest a buck or two just to prove there is no hard feelings between christens as we all initiated from Eve who after eating the apple passed on that new found intelligence.

Don't tell the priest you are not a Catholic, if the child's parents are okay with it and they chose you, no one can argue.

Church law requires that sponsors (aka Godparents) be practicing Catholics. If you are baptized, and there is a Catholic sponsor, you can be a witness:
