Okay, Lent is not a holiday nor is it even a festival,it is a solemn period of forty days of penance that reflects the passion and suffering of Christ,and the origin of Lent is the Passion and honored as such by the Catholic church.

It's a Catholic holiday first and foremost, so I suppose you could say the place of origin is Rome. The idea is that you are purifying yourself in preparation for Easter.
