I only really knew what the media had portrayed but I started reading on Islam last night, as written by Huston Smith and it's sad and funny how the Islam that we know of as American's is a lot different from the Islam the Muhammed preached. There are some things I knew but others i was frankly a lot i was surprised about. Especially the part about tolerance for other religions i.e. Christianity.

Very little, other than what I see in mass media. You may have some concept of how accurate that might be.
I do not think I am alone in saying that there is little to interest me in a religion that I am told calls for my death as an "infidel." That's what we hear. And frankly, since conversion to Islam holds no interest for me, why should I know more than I do?
I do not believe the majority of Muslims are violent, but there may indeed be passages in the scriptures which feed the fanaticism of the violent fringe. That probably does not matter very much if their fanaticism is fed by one thing or by another. What matters is they are making all peaceful Muslims look bad.

Sorry to disapoint you, but the polls show that NON-RELIGIOUS the the fastest growing thing. People are leaving ALL religions in groves for nothing. No religion is winning AND it's largely among the young who look at what's going on in the world and blame Islam and Christianity equally and say NO religion is better than religion.
It's estimated 50 to 100 million people each year desert relgions, including Islam, to just live a life.
Sweden was 95% religious in 1950 and today it is 65% religious.
Same thing with the Netherlands.

that is on the biggest myth web site. It was the fastest growing but now it has pretty much stalled in the last 5 years.
Jesus said that few would be in the right religion so having large numbers doesn't make it right.
Satan rules the many!
Many people are being converted at the edge of a sword in Africa. It is accept that religon or die. But is that joining because they agree with it or because they don't want to die?
What we know about Islam?
It has perpatrated a mass slaughter worst than Hitler in Germany did. In Africa, and has taken 30,000 little children to use as sex slaves. Raping as a war weapon. Telling us that they do not value any human life not even their own.
Sucide bombers have killed members of their own religion.
Blowing up members of their own community. Not just as a current news item but Iraq and Iran were in an 8 year war with each other. they teach that anyone that isn't in their brand of muslim is going to die and they are going to take over the world and the infidels will all die. If they die in this persuit they go to a paradise of virgins and good food.
Heaven is their ultimate goal and murder is the quickest way to attain it. should the rest of the world be afraid?
With it being the second largest religion after Roman Catholic; yes! we should be very afraid.
Does the pope speak for the Roman Catholics?
He called them an evil empire and denounced what they were doing in Iraq. Should that be a wake up call? Yes!
Even those Christians who are prostant can see the dangers of the muslim people and that religion.

I know that the name "Islam" comes from the Arabic word meaning "submission". That is to say, its followers strive to submit to the will of Allah. They are monotheistic, and despite what some would like to think, they do NOT worship Muhammed.Rather, they revere him as the final prophet. According to Islam, there were other prophets before Muhammed, including Jesus, but their teachings have been falsified by Jews and Christians.Their holy book is the Qura'n and they also use the Hadith, which is a collection of sayings attributed to Muhammed. Like Christians, the Muslims also believe that a Day of Judgment is coming. Also, Muslims are supposed to pray 5 times a day in the direction of Mecca and, with the exception of pregnant women, children, and the ill, they are expected to fast during the entire month of Ramadan. Also, Muslims who are financially and physically able are expected to make at least one pilgrimage to Mecca during their lifetime. Islam also places a great deal of emphasis on giving alms and helping widows and orphans.

It is a fact that Islam is the fastest growing religion and that is because of conversion. Birth rate is no higher than that of the Jewish community or the Christian community. Muslims cannot have a child out of marriage, and those who do are disregarded as Muslims, so that limits the birthrate as it is. Name one conquest that you have heard of to spread Islam. Terrorism is not a conquest because that affects everyone and many Muslims have died in terrorist schemes as well as people of other religions.

Islam is not only a religion but an entire way of life, where as many religions set down rules and people may attend their church once a week, Muslims must pray 5 times a day not only that but every part of their daily life is intergrated within the rules and guide of the Islamic Faith.
For example when we wake we must thank Almighy Allah for giving us another day here in this life in this world, we will pray Fajr the first prayer of the day, we must be weary of where we purchase our food iteams what is in those food items, we must be aware of all our surroundings.
This is Islam and this is the great part of it its a way of life not just religion

I know Islam stems from the same Abramic roots as Judaism and Christianity. It doesn not believe in the divinity of Jesus in fact the notion of a God in human form would be repugnant to its basic tenets.
The two main branches are Shiite and Sunni.
The Shiite branch tends to be more conservative in their approach. They believe their religious leadership should descend from the family of Ali exclusively.
The Sunnis are the more liberal branch and they believe that caliphs (religious leaders) following Muhammad should be elected. Hereditary should not enter into it.
There are also Sufis who as I understand it follow a kind of Islamic mysticism.
I don't know why it is growing so fast. Perhaps it has something to do with how young of a faith it is compared to the other Abramic religion and that the doctrine is relatively simple (since it doesn't have to deal with the concepts of one God and a trinity.)

I think it's the fastest growing religion because people are turning away from the trintiy based religion which is confusing and unfulfilling to them. They are learning that Islam is pure monotheism, worship of God and God alone. People have become more aware of Islam since 9/11 and looked into what it is all about. They see that Islam is the same religion practiced by all the prophets, including Abraham, and also Jesus, who prayed directly to God.

The religion of Islam was begun early in the 7th century by a man named Muhammad who claimed to have been visited by the angel Gabriel. During these angelic visitations, which continued for about 23 years until Muhammad's death, the angel Gabriel revealed to Muhammad the words of God (which is Allah in Arabic) in Arabic. These dictated revelations comprise what is collectively known as the Qur'an, Islam's holy book. Muslims, the followers of Islam, believe the Qur'an to be the preexistent and perfect word of Allah. Further, there is no such thing as an English, or any other language, version of the Qur'an. These are simply translations of the meaning of the Qur'an, which only exists in Arabic.
The key beliefs of Islam are that Allah is the only true God that exists, and that Muhammed was Allah's prophet. In fact, by simply stating this is a person considered to have converted to Islam. Islam itself means "surrender" or "submission." Because Allah is the only true God, the religion that worships Allah must naturally submit to him only, thus "Islam." Islam purports to be the one true religion, of which all other religions have derived themselves from or been created in a mockery of (including Judaism and Christianity).
Muslims, followers of Islam, base their lives on the Five Pillars: 1) The testimony of faith: "There is no true god but God (Allah), and Muhammad is the Messenger (Prophet) of God;" 2) Prayer: five prayers must be performed every day; 3) Giving: one must give to the needy, as all comes from Allah; 4) Fasting: besides occasional fasting, all Muslims must fast during the celebration of Ramadan (the ninth month of the Islamic calendar); and 5) Hajj: the pilgrimage to Makkah (performed in the twelfth month of the Islamic calendar). These five tenets make the framework of obedience for Muslims, and are taken very seriously and literally. A Muslim's entrance into Paradise hinges upon obedience to these tenets.
