When it comes time to cut the cake, the cake is disassembled and the top is usually set aside for the bride & groom. The remaining two parts are then cut from there, depending on the number of guests (usually the layer is cut into 2 inch "slices" (all the way across the layer) and then 1 inch sections are cut from those. Or as the diagram shows (below), it can be cut in spiral layers.

The very top tier, according to tradition, is to be taken off the cake, just before it's cut, taken home, & frozen until the first anniversary is celebrated. The rest of the cake is then sliced as you would normally cut any cake. If you're the bride, have someone cut & serve the cake who knows what they're doing. Small pieces are served so everyone will get a taste of it.

No, no, not the top layer first, that isnt supposed to get cut at all, its supposed to be saved and taken home for your 1st anniversary.

We were told to make the first slice into our 3 layer cake in he bottom, but not to go under the 2nd layer. They took it to the back and I think thy took all the layers apart and then sliced it up to serve. Our cut was just for picture purposes.

Kate is right. The top and usually smallest layer goes home with the bride and groom to keep until the first wedding anniversary.
