Well since you're talking about gallons and dollars I a ca issue must be an American. Since I live in Canada, when I convert the liters that we measure fuel in, I'm now paying about $3.86 per gallon US.
I don't think $.14 more per gallon is what is significantly impact how I drive, however I do find myself taking public transit part of the way to work now, whereas in the past I would have avoided at all costs.

I would love to ride my bike to work, but I live 20 miles one way away from work and there are no side roads to take to get there to stay off the highway. Since people are so stupid and inconsiderate I'd probably get run over by the idiots. Therefore I'd probably have to deal with the $4 somehow. Maybe buy a cheap little car that gets good milage.

Hypothetically!? Some stations in the city are already at $4/gallon. I just paid $3.45 or something.
I already telecommute, so the #1 thing I'm doing is slowing down and driving more gently. Saves a lot of gas.

I doubt it would change my driving habits much. I think it would have to hit $6 for me to really consider using public transportation. Right now driving to and from work takes 20 minutes, vs. 1 hour and 15 minutes by bus.

I only work 5 minutes away from where I live, so I would just walk. I walk some of the time anyway. Everything I need is close to my house as well (groceries, bank, post office) so I really don't technically NEED a car.

I would work a bit more overtime and continue with my life as usual without whining. One extra hour a month pretty much pays for it. Where the hell are you crybabies when the price of housing jumps?
