We were in Vietnam decades before the Gulf of Tonkin incidents, and Ho Chi Minh was an ally at one time too.

The US sent OSI operatives into Vietnam to help Ho Chi Minh and his Viet Minh forces resist Japanese occupation during World War II. There is a story about an OSI medic saving Ho Chi Minh's life.

Ho Chi Minh wrote Vietnam's declaration of independence with many references to the U.S. and our Declaration of Independence. Ho Chi Minh recited is declaration with the Star Spangled Banner playing in the background. That was in 1945, which is almost 20 years before the Gulf of Tonkin incidents.

Also, the conflict in Iraq has only general similarities to the Vietnam War. They are a world apart if you get into any detail.

No, we didn't have a presence there until the French abandoned Indochina after the fall of Dien Bien Phu in 1954. After France left, it was divided into 4 countries - North & South Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia.

The US then became involved in helping the non-communist South Vietnam from being attacked and subjugated by the Communist North Vietnam. This aid started under Eisenhower. So, at most, we had a presence there for 8 years before the Gulf of Tonkin incident occurred.

But there really is no comparison between Vietnam and Iran - the differences are many and vast.

And if there is to be war, it will not be the US or Israel that instigates it. The belligerence of Ahmadinejad, with his declarations of "Death to America", "Death to Israel", and promising to wipe Israel off the map, plus his disregard for the UN and the rest of the world regarding nuclear weapon development, and with the recent incursion into Iraqi waters and taking British military personnel hostage are all sure signs of a coming conflict. A conflict that Iran will start.

I just don't understand why so many people think a Neville Chamberlain approach will work any better with Iran than it did with Hitler.

I don't know where you are getting your news. Isreal is not the one threatening to wipe someone off the Earth. Wake up.

Vietnam last exactly 10,000 days. Over twenty six years.
