I live outside of Baton Rouge, La. but the geography is not as important as if there would be any publications, online rescouces, or clubs that I could reference.

The best place to go is the state agency governing inland fishes, have attached the link below. Call the regional office, or office closest to your area and ask for any publications they put out about fishing opportunities. More then likely they have done some amount of work in your area and can give you the best advise about shorebound opportunites. Bait shops are good, but sometimes dont give up the best spots. Another way to do it is get a local map of your area, your car keys, and go out serching. Some of my best spots have come from that.

Hang out with those who fish, usually at the bait and tackle shop, they'll tell you. I'm sure Baton Rouge in the northern Louisanna country has some fine catfish fishing holes.

dowload and use google earth! you can see all the small and big ponds near you and many of them you probably didnt even know were there, then go drive around and see if they look like "fishy" ponds and if so give it a try! thats what i always did the past few years in highschool. but now i have a boat and im glad im not you

best advice
buy many live fish from a shop and put them in your bathtub
that way you will have a safe and local location and you can also have the satisfaction of catching those fish
