Originaly it was Digital Video Disk, but people started using it to mean Digital Versatile Disk. In fact, it doesn't stand for anything - the DVD Forum ( who define the specs etc.) decided in 1999 that it would just be a three letter identifier without any meaning!

The correct answer is : Digital Versatile Disc.(spelt with a "C "not a "K") because the disc contains more than just video.
Before compact disc was released in1982 Phillips and Sony (who co-produced the format) were trying to find a suitable name to call it .One of the names suggested was "Digital Audio Disc" ( DAD ) but didn't use it so they decided on Compact Disc (CD) after Compact Cassette (CC)

I've still got a Sony demo disc that came with one of the first DVD players...And that's what they called DVD way back in 1997.
