The key is making a memory for the kids to remember. We have 5 kids and money was tight when they were little but we made cookies, made tents out of sheets and camped on the floor watching scary movies, went for a walk in the rain splashed puddles, play a board game and find a small prize for the winner, take out your photographs and look at them with the kids have them make up funny captions for them. You can do anything but the most important thing is the time you give to them. My kids remember all the memories we created together and now are doing the same for their kids.

I have a 4-ingredient cookbook that my kid loves. You could check out recipes on the internet for something easy the kids can help you make. Most kids like to help cook.
We also like to do "movie days." Darken the windows, pull the blankets & pillows out into the living room, make some snacks (whatever's lying around), and watch a DVD. Sometimes we also build a fort (sheet over the couch, tied to a kitchen chair & bookshelf to hold it up) to lie under. One time she told me that these kind of days are better than McDonalds, lol.
I'm in CA, where the weather is not bad, even in the rain. If it's not too cold, I highly recommend going out and playing in the rain. Your kids will think you've lost your mind, you'll have a blast too, and it's free. I love going out in the rain.
Have fun!

hmmmm. i don't know if the 12 yr old would like it but, have a day, or maybe just an hour, of make believe? use the furniture and some blankets and make tents in the living room. pretend it's anyplace you want. a ship, the jungle, the desert. let their imaginations run wild. have lunch in the tents too or grab a flashlight and tell spooky stories. like a camp out. how about making home made pizza's? it isn't real expensive and it's lots of fun. they can make their own. whatever you do, have fun and try not to go crazy being stuck in the house all day. i hope it doesn't rain to much.

Call your local library and see if they have any kind of activity going on. I've been impressed with some of the stuff my local library does for kids. In the least going and picking out some books/movies or playing computer games at the library can kill some time.

Rent a movie they all want to see. It's only about 4 dollars. Do it on friday so they don't know.
Then wake up saturday and just make them all their favorite breakfast, watch the movie, play a board/card game, then take them to see a favorite relative. At that age, I don't expect you'll be able to keep their attention for longer than the movie and game.

Go to various craft sites and look for some inexpensive craft ideas using items you have around the house. Kids that age LOVE making things. One of my favorite sites is www.makingfriends.com. Another good one is www.theideabox.com.

Well since its Spring but it's not really acting like it, try making a craft that has to do with spring, maybe with flowers and make something to hang on their doors or the front door that says welcome. Also, you could go to the YMCA or a place like that and take the kids swimming or play basketball with them, that's always a fun time!

Board Games. Monopoly, Risk, Scrabble....
Followed by a kitchen adventure (they help you make whatever they want for dinner) followed by you all making a cake or pie from scratch.
Followed by a rental movie and popcorn

put up a tent in the living room and have a movie day. make popcorn and let them help make snacks. kids love to cook with moms help.
or re-arrange their bedrooms and let them do it the way they want. let them decide how everything goes even their clothes. not only will they have their rooms clean but they will have fun.
