Ironically, these people would be better off just consuming the real sugar drinks!! Diet sodas/soft drinks contain a product called aspartame or saccharine which actually blocks the receptors in our brains that tell us when we have reached satiety, you know that pleasantly full feeling??? Therefore, we tend to overindulge in an effort to feel comfortably full. So a product which is marketed as being a weight loss aid will in actual fact hinder weight loss and only promote further sales of the product!! .......................The evils of the marketing companies targeting unwary consumers.

A really good website to check out for you:

It makes a huge difference.

Assuming they drink a 20 oz bottle of soda, the diet soda has under 1 calorie, we'll just call it 0. The sugared soda will have 250.

So if they were to switch to the sugared soda, and made no other changes to their diet or excercise program, they would gain an extra pound every 14 days, (3500 calories per pound.) and more than 26 pounds each year.

I think it's also because diet drinks like sodas doesn't contain calories, so it doesn't add to the calories they'll get from the sweets. So it's like "I love chocolates and sodas but I don't want to gain more weight from all the calories. Which one should I choose then? I know! I'd rather have both. Why would I be deprived from both when I can just drink diet soda so I'll get lesser calories? Yey!"

Why do you watch what other people eat? Is it any of your business? My God, if I was interested in how much the fat woman in the restaurant is eating, or if she is drinking diet or normal coke I'd seriously need help. And anyways, why only fat people, why not go the whole hog and make it your life's work to monitor what EVERYONE eats, that way you'll have twice as much to b*tch about wouldn't you? What a waste of time!!!!!

Because its usually fatter people who feel they should do something about their weight. Slimmer people in general wont care as much and go for full fat fun!

But seriously, why not drink water instead of a diet soft drink if you're that bothered?

No, they don't think about it at all. It's just a preference - you get to like the taste.
Many skinny people drink diet drinks too. Haven't you noticed?

I used to work with a hugely overweight woman who used to regularly have 2 fish suppers, a king size mars bar and a DIET coke for her lunch. LOL. Hilarious.
Missing the point somewhat...

Although having said that I do have a skinny latte and a chocolate croissant of a morning but that's because I don't like the taste of whole milk and also I'm not a big fat bloater.

I know what you mean. I know someone (very overweight) who drinks far too much vodka, but mixes it with diet coke!

Well done Minx - I've been spreading the word on the evils of Aspartame for years!
