The tree of Knowledge is a metaphor for the will of God.
It is symbolic of the opening of eyes to the real world. Eve, on eating the fruit, realised she would no longer be immortal, but doomed to die at tthe end of her allotted span. Adam ate the fruit in order to be with her. This has nothing to do with simplistic animal behaviour.

In one of the so called "Lost Books" Adam and Eve when they were living in the garden are described in terms that make them sound like they were energy based beings, before eating the fruit. So I would have to say that we wouldn't look at reproduction the same way if they hadn't partaken...

I read the other answers and there seems to be a little confusion.
1. When Eve ate of the fruit, nothing happened. It wasn't until Adam ate that things went haywire. It was his eating that caused them to fall. God gave instructions DIRECTLY TO ADAM, Eve was created after the fact and got her update from Adam. Since the bible says she.
"gave also unto her husband WITH HER; and he did eat. And the eyes of them both were opened, and THEY knew they were naked (Genesis.3:6-7). He was near her, knew what God had said, let Eve transgress God's law to see what would happen (since he didn't understand this 'dying' thing and all), and then tried to implicate that God was the cause of this by saying "the woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat". Eve didn't make him eat, he chose to do so. Everybody paid a serious price in the end, but eve didn't cause this. God already knew they would fall.
2. All living things have seed inside to reproduce after their own kind. We are no different. The only specific difference is that we choose to procreate (when, where). Of course this dosen't include accidental pregnancies and the like. He instructed them to be fruitful and multiply and replenish the earth; so we would still be doing this.
3. God knew what was to be for the good of all creation from the beginning (Isaiah 46:10-11)-
"Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My council shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure:
Calling a ravenous bird from the east, the man that executeth my counce from a far country: yea, I have spoken It, I will also bring it to pass; I have purposed it, I will also do it".
After 'sinning', wasting their time trying to cover their nakedness, and everybody (except the serpent) tried passing blame, God covered their 'nakedness' by shedding blood in order to 'make coats of skins, and clothed them (Genesis 3:21). This is the first direct implication that 'without the shedding of blood, there is no remission of sin (Hebrews 9:22)-
"And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission". These verses refer to temporal sacrifices that God would endure until the 'one perfect sacrifice' would come, as further reading in the chapter will show.
4. I'm going to make this short. Concerning the 'lost books', you may want to stay away from literature that is not divinely inspired (and trust me on this, these 'seem' o.k., but are not). Non-scriptural references only plant seeds of confusion, deciet, doubt and unbelief concerning the bible (no matter how much you know, this garbage will eventually affect you somewhere, somehow). Contamination of the truth and the propogation of doubt are the only goals of these things.

I imagine if anything they'd be breeding more. Think about it, all they have to do is pick fruit and name animals. If they started pumping out babies like Fords, they'd be following god's command (be fruitful and multiply).
Besides, they ate of the fruit of knowledge. Our culture has shown that mass-breeding practices are not exactly indicative of better judgment or intelligence.

The law of reprodcution in Genesis would have been that all humans would know exactly when that law of reproduction would have set into Eve to bring another offspring, To produce a Child with eternal life, But since Eve gave in to the serpent to have a relationship out of God's due time, She then brought forth death, Now women has lost that knowledge as to when she can actually conceive to being forth another offspring to God that would have been born with eternal life, So now No WOMAN ANYWHERE can exactly know when she can conceive, Why do you think we have birth control medicines, Animals don't have it, They never lost their knowledge to know when to concieve, Only woman did.

God made man because none of the animals he created had intelligence. And we would be "breeding" one way or another, the difference is that women would experience labor.

What the bible means is that women are bad because they can not stick tot he rules. there are obviously alot of good women though and that is another reason for the bible being wrong.
