on most issues people tend to pick one of a only few sides (in a lot of cases only two, but say for the sake of argument, 4 or 5 different opinions on a specific issue, max).

However, on the topics of existence of God(s) and the human soul we have literally dozens if not hundred varying opinions (many mutually exclusive). Is this not an indicator that there is a lot of bullshitting going on?

Can you think of other topics which yield such a plethora of differing opinions?

Ent, then chances are you picked the wrong one too.

Sean, most of the things you listed fall in a 'for' or 'against' category. Two sides.

G: good point, although most of the things you list are personal preferences, internal, not external. A god would be an external force.

Trill: on the topic of me: I KNOW there is a lot of BS going on :P

People have different opinions even when it comes to things that lay in front of their eyes. So it's only logical for them to have even more different opinions about metaphysical stuff like God's nature.

Here's a topic: try asking "what do you think about acid zebra" and make sure that everybody will answer, not just your friends. You will surely find lots of people thinking that you are a nice/nasty 30-something years old guy, but also a couple of people thinking that you are actually a 19 years old girl, or a 60-years old undefined something, or the first IA that has passed the Turing test. People will say that you are nice, funny, annoying, impertinent, polite, smart, stupid, they may not know you or be indifferent to you, and many many other opinions. Would that be an indicator that there is a lot of bullshitting going on as far as you are concerned?...

Also, how many scientific theories have been built to explain light, gravitation and so on? Less then 4-5, yes, but again, they were *scientific theories*, not *opinions*. Is that a sign for loads of bullshit concerning light and gravitation?

And if you say that opinions about abortion & co fall only in 2 categories, then so do the answers to the question "is there a God?". It really depends on the question...

Politics and Religion. The only two topics I know that will be sure to get you into a fight and the only two I know that have so many different opinions that no two people ever seem to agree on 100%. Yes, it is an indicator that there's a lot of BS in both.

i'm sure there are others, but the only one that i can think of is the environment.

it's not a case of yes or no, but everyone has their own idea of what would be best. (although some people seem to completely ignore the issue)

i think taking care of the planet is a spiritual thing since everything is connected, but a lot of people would disagree with that.

what do you think?

The fact that they're all mutually exclusive (unless one realizes that God is talking to other gods if one literally translates Genesis) means that there can be either one or none.

Then again, my favorite examples are medieval rulers who practiced Judaism, Roman Catholicism, Eastern Rite, and Islam all at the same time to "hedge their bets".

I suddenly recall being a child in the cereal aisle of the supermarket faced with choosing only one cereal from the hundreds of brightly colored boxes. What will it be, Fruit Loops or Lucky Charms? Wait! Cap'n Crunch has a free decoder ring! Cool!

Lots of things have multiple choices. These are not of eternal significance and don't cause the intense feelings that spirituality does. (well, political ideology perhaps)

Favorite color, choice photo editor, choice of place to live, political ideology, treatment options for chronic pain, etc.

Well sweetie along that train of thought, put yourself into Satan's shoes. If there was one way and ONLY one way to get to Heaven, you would do your level best to try and dilute it, skew it, change it, confuse it, and generally mess it up, right?
Hence, a thousand religions.

Oh, I almost forgot, I made sugar cookies while I was home, here, have some! :)
