I actually do feel pretty sad for people who live their life with this kind of "fear and trembling" as the bible says. I have seen people frozen in fear because they're afraid of going to hell. I live in the bible belt and have gone to various churches in the christian denomination, and I've heard many testimonies. I know some people took this question lightly, but having witnessed this very thing myself, I have to answer this outside of my normal sarcastic way and say that what you have asked is true, it does happen, and it does make me sad. I wish they could live life and enjoy it and stop worrying about the empty threats the bible holds. Thanks for this question.

See, I think your last comment says it all. "Atheists are quite content with not knowing." If you realize that there is something you don't know, and are comfortable in not knowing it, then you have ceased to learn. You are for all intents and purposes, a vegetable. Are you really happy with that? We invented a God? Wow, you really give us too much credit. We are, I admit, brilliant, but we are not that smart. The God I speak to each day, according to you is a figment of my imagination? The God that speaks to me each day, is imaginary? Hey, don't wake me up, I know what I know, and I have The Book, The God, The Son, and The Holy Spirit to back me up. And I am not alone. Do you have any idea, how many millions of people, well educated, smart people who believe as I do. Why would you even care what Christians believe or say, if you are so comfortable with your belief? Do you know the phrase: Me thinks thou dost protest too much? Jesus Christ came into my heart at about age 31. I had lived "the other life". I was enjoying that life. I could do anything I wanted to and not feel bad about it. I thought then, it was great. Then on July 20, 1975, Jesus Christ came into my heart and I was "born again". So I have lived both lives, and I would never, never, go back to what I was. You can have Him also, and I pray you will have Him in your heart, before you meet Him face to face. God Bless.

I cope with it by answering questions in Yahoo Answers. The only way to counter religious superstition is through education.
I do feel sad that people are still so superstitious, but I also realize that people still, as a whole, have decent lives. Their lives aren't totally wasted. It's just too bad that religion does as much harm as it does.
People are constantly evolving. Eventually, society will evolve past the need for superstitious belief. I see it happening already. It will just take a long time, though. I'm happy to be a positive part of the process.

It's not easy.... while they are rude, arrogant, and self righteous... I still feel pity for them as they are fellow human beings. I can only hope that one day their eyes are opened to the REAL truth.... not the truth that they've deluded themselves to believe.
Nice question by the way! I was about to reem someone until i read the details & saw that the question was asked by someone on our side & not the dark side.
Edit:
In regards to weatherman_1965: Did you read the whole question??

Why is this limited to atheists?
Aren't any other people in the world bothered by fundimentalist religious nuts starting wars or blowing themselves up in the name of their gods?

At times with difficulty. But I'm more concerned about hunger, disease and oppression. And there's not that much I can do there either except donate to Amnesty International.

I try to ignore them. It's difficult considering the death and destruction they're still inflicting on the world. Most of them don't realize the damage they're doing. They blame everyone but themselves.Hopefully over time, they'll become enlightened. They may destroy all of us first. That's what saddens me.

These people chose willful ignorance. They have available to them the same resources that the rest of us do that led to our decision.
To a certain extent, I can understand the *need* or *want* to believe in God, but logic trumps faith every time.

What sorrow and sadness?
Seriously though, it does bother me that so many people waste the only life they have on that rubbish.

By coming and playing in R&S of course...
We don't get too many fundies down our way, so I gotta hassle the imports - it's a small life, but it's all mine!
