Probably forever. These factions- Shi'ite and Sunni have been fighting each other since 632 A.D. Iraq the country did not come into existence until the British decided, in its infinite stupidity, to create a nation in 1914. Iraq was carved out of the Ottoman Empire by the French and British as agreed in the Sykes-Picot Agreement. On 11 November 1920 it became a League of Nations mandate under British control with the name "State of Iraq".
We should take our troops out. They are just cannon fodder for these people. I know that benchmarks should be set. Al Maliki is acting as if he can sit on his a*s and do nothing but support Al Sadr and the death squads within his own government and let the US soldiers continue to take the hits.
The military claims the Iraqis are taking the lead but our casualties continue to mount. We should leave trainers and get our soldiers home.

Maybe sending in the Canadian Army......you know, the army that won WW ll with a little help from Britain. Let them be the UN peacekeepers.

The Sunnie vs Shiite conflict has been going on since the death of Mohammad. There is absolutely no reason to think anyone is going to figure out a solution in the near future

When was the last time a political solution ever really solved a religious conflict? I can't recall any such success.
