need to find out the chassis number, can i do this without looking at the car? i dont have the car with me at the mo. Can i somehow look online and find it out from there?

it should be on the log book or V5

If it's been recorded as a total loss it currently is not classed as a motor vehicle and doesn't have a V5. If you repair it and intend to put it back on the road it will have to have a VID check and be issued with a new number and V5.

You might be able to phone a dealership and quote the reg number. If they're in a good mood then they'll tell you the chassis number. You might have to explain why you want the info first though.

Do you have an instruction manual for the car/owners documents sometimes it is listed in this book, i.e. in the service part?

you can find out without your car yes, it will be on your log book (v5)
