Unfortunately, penicillin allergy is over-diagnosed. Penicillin may have been prescribed for what the doctor thought was a bacterial infection, when in fact it was a viral infection associated with a rash. This is termed a viral exanthem and is quite common in children. But because of the temporal association of taking the antibiotic and breaking out with a rash, one often mistakenly assumes that the rash is due to allergy to the antibiotic.

Many of these people are later given penicillin, tolerate it, and erroneously come to the conclusion that they outgrew the allergy, when if fact, they were never allergic to it in the first place.

But, because penicillin allergy can have serious, sometimes fatal consequences, it is often safer to assume one is allergic in the above circumstances.

There are skin tests and other tests to check for penicillin allergy. Their reliability is less than perfect. Check with an allergist.

The chances are high that you still have it. Your doctor can test you so that you'll know for certain.
