You have one previous answer that came very close, but missed a few countries and cultures that had occupied Vietnam.
Vietnam was occupied at one time or another by:
Chinese
Japanese
French
Americans
Champa
Siam (Now Thailand)
There are over fifty distinct cultures that occupy Vietnam, with some having their own country or kingdom at one time that is now a part of modern Vietnam.
Ex: The Champa are descendants from the Cham kingdom, which was much of South Vietnam. The Kinh (Vietnamese) defeated them and absorbed their kingdom into Vietnam.
The Hmong occupy the mountains of North Vietnam, Laos and South China. The Hmong are considered a distinctly separate culture from the Kinh or Vietnamese, but had never created a kingdom or country for themselves. This is similar to the other ethnic groups in Vietnam.
What's more interesting is who did not occupy Vietnam. The Mongols attempted to occupy Vietnam twice, and were defeated both times. Vietnam had independence while China was controlled by the Mongols during the same time. This era gave Vietnam the opportunity to develop their distinction from the Chinese.

Vietnam was occupied by China for 10
centuries until 938AD and remained independent until the late 19th Century.
In 1859, Vietnam fell under French
colonization and then was occupied by Japan during WWII. It regained its independence on September 2, 1945 and went to war with France until 1954. Then the
US went to war with North Vietnam to stop the spread of communism in Southeast Asia.
This was at the request of South Vietnam,
The 2 countries were divided at the 17th Parallel. The US then left Vietnam in 1975
and the country was re-united.
