What is the best way to seal the timber and take the edge of the colour.

use a product called bourneseal this will also toughen the wood.

in truth i would do nothing with the floor until you see how much it actually shrinks once heating etc is on! i have seen floors shrink by up to 6mm in width (on each board) best wait till its shrunk then fill the gaps then stain the floor with a harmonising stain the give it a good few coats of a hardglaze specificaly designed for wooden floors

AND DONT LET ANYONE WITH HIGH HEELS ON WALK ON IT SOFT WOOD WILL RUIN IT
