Trust me, publicly saying you don't believe in god offends many people no matter how you say it.

Ideally, we shouldn't be rude.
You're perfectly correct when you say that there is no reason why an answer, or a question cannot be phrased in a respectful, non-rude manner.
A lot of people fall back on the excuse that rudeness is about perception. It's a poor excuse.
Let me illustrate with this simple example of rudeness.
You believe in God? You must be insane.
You don't believe in God? You must be insane.
You believe in ghosts / spirits. You must be insane.
Three prime examples of very rude behaviour.
Not the kind of thing I find acceptable, even though I do encounter it daily.
One small thing I note - the first two instances, to the best of my knowledge, have Never occurred.
I wonder what it is about the spirit in spirituality that attracts such a harsh criticism.
I'm afraid I don't know.
I try to adopt a policy of keeping an open mind, I voice my disagreement when I disagree, I try to correct people when I see they are factually wrong, or present my own point of view.
I'm not perfect, and I don't claim to be, but I try not to sink too low in my criticism of others.
It's a shame that people are rude.
But they are. We all are, from time to time.
Maybe it's just something we have to live with.
Maybe it's something we should as you have stand up and say It is not good enough to do this.
I applaud you for the strong stance you have taken.
Thank you.
Courage to express the conviction of your beliefs, honestly, openly, is a virtue lacking here sometimes.

One problem is that many people don't see belittling atheists as being in any way rude: "you don't have any faith, so what have you got to be offended about?" I try to keep my cool - at least I prefer not to degenerate to outright attack, though sarcasm and vitriol are very important parts of my life. Sometimes one can let it roll off the old back, but sometimes one feels provoked enough to defend through attack. For example, something like this:

"you poor atheists, you bash christians all the time and you can't take one question that might 'hurt your feelings'? thats just not a good thing is it?"

is almost laughable enough to just dismiss. Almost. However, when the "evidence" has been deliberately removed in order to make it basically impossible to mount a defence, the temptation to lash out is all-but irresistible.

Sometimes I think being rude is a readers perception. Not all answers are rude just because they are opposed to another's way of thinking. That's the problems with the net--you can't see/hear a person's expressions.
Others may seem to be rude, when, in fact, I think most of the time they are joking. Or are, perhaps, more friendly with the person who they are responding to and other readers take it for rudeness.
Some are just confrontational. Make great debate team members. That's not always a bad thing. Makes people think.
And...some people are just rude.

I don't think she is just talking religion. The generation coming up now,I'm afraid has not had the parental guidelines we did as kids.If we were to speak to our elders the way the kids do now.Lord help my brother and I !.No we weren't abused but our backside were soar.Big difference.Today the parents are too busy trying to make ends meet .24 hr shopping and jobs take its toll on our kids.No supervision etc..The responses on here alone proves how most of the children and some adults were raised or taught. It really is a sad state to see. They seem to think it is funny to be rude and tough. It is a shell that most have built around them and it is how they get attention that they lack. It also proves the old adage of they aren't smart enough to answer any other way.LOL Lord I'm going to hear about this I'm sure. But the truth hurts LOL

Friend you call sin ---Sin, you can not smooth over in with tickling words to suit someones beliefs. I try not to offend anyone, because God could have left me also in darkness, But God shown me a light of Truth & for 37 yrs. I have followed that, If people don;t want to be rub the wrong way, then they need to re-phrase their question. I can not compromise for anyone, Not even my family. Though I do agree That I will not make fun of someone's Beliefs as they have mine, But neither will I let them downgrade Truth.

What is rude is when the Jehovah Witness`s knock on your door to convert you and you say you`re not interested ,THEY WON`T LEAVE. When this happens ,it is the only time i am out rightly Rude. They stick their foot in my door and try to convince me God is Real .
Other religious door knockers do this also.
If they really want to convert people to believing god is real -They should bring him with them .
How about a " Miracle Show ".Turn my car into a pile of gold .
Then I might start believing .If not Stay off my effin property.

Rudeness is a test of one's beliefs. A civilized man who kept company only amongst the 'civilized' proves nothing. A 'civilized' man who can remain so even amid the barbarous or 'uncivilized', whomever they may be, demonstrates their character (sorry to all the feminist about the male pronouns).

The test is not to 'civilize' everyone around us, but to civilize ourselves so that the uncivilized around us cannot affect our decisions. Religion is no more, or less, an instigator than any subject.

That's true for most people.
But when someone stubbornly persists in saying that their religion is "the ONLY one that is right" the gloves come off.
That kind of dogmatic idiocy does not deserve courtesy, nor should it be encouraged in any way shape or form.

Religion brings out the worst in people, as demonstrated here daily.

I think that says something about the entire concept.
