Ground beef is ground up strips taken from leftovers of other cuts. Pieces too small to make a good cut of their own, so it's ground up and made useable that way.

It's not meat that makes people sick, it's bacteria. Ground beef has a lot of surface area so you have more potential exposure, that's all. Cooking it well is all that's necessary.

All the above answer are from dumb people. The reason ground meat is more dangerous is because of the surface area, how many things it comes in contact with, and the ability for the ground meat to re-produce the toxins. Good ground meat comes the part of the cow called the "Chuck". This is located on the shoulder part of the cow, somewhat tender but not as tender as the "loin", yet leaner then other parts due to slight muscle use in that area. If you need a better answer please don't ask these uneducated people anymore. Thanks.

I respect your opinion on the ethics of animal welfare. I am not a vegetarian, I am a meat eater, as far as burgers go, I tend to make my own with fresh beef mince from my butcher or a good quality mince from a supermarket. I have eaten plenty of fast food in the past before I became a more food educated person. What's staggering to me is this concept of 'fast food means crap food' but why? I would happily pay a bit more for a beef burger that's from an animal reared properly, not necessarily organic free range but has been looked after properly, This country (UK) is inundated with fast food places on most street corners, supermarkets are flooded with inferior quality meat, you can't escape from it which is shame. Things are changing though, people are becoming more and more aware of what good food is, pressure is being put on supermarkets to sell better quality food and one has even gone totally free range with there eggs, which is brilliant. There is still a long way to go before we can get that perfect balance of price/welfare but I think we will get there. I think people need to realise you don't need to buy 4 chickens a week just because they are cheap (my dad does this), buy 2 better quality ones instead, and have something else to replace the other 2 chickens.

None. It's not the meat that makes anyone sick--it's germs that aren't destroyed by proper cooking.
