Genital herpes is almost always spread by some sort of sexual contact.
A person can NOT get genital herpes from using a toilet after someone with genital herpes. They also can NOT get genital herpes from a shower, bathtub, drinking after someone, touching their clothes, etc.
A person CAN get ORAL herpes (cold sores) from kissing someone with them or sharing a drink, but NOT genital herpes.
I have had genital herpes for over 6 years. I lived with my parents and two younger brothers for most of those 6 years. NONE of them ever got genital herpes from using the toilet after me. I've also had several family members and boyfriends (now exs) use the toilet after me and none of them ever contracted genital herpes. It's just not spread that way!

RE:
what precautions should I take if someone in the family has genital herpes?
A family member just found out today that she has genital herpes. She has been sick for a while now and now we know why! We baby-sit her son in our house and my question is: can her son get it from his house (toilet) or can he get it on his mouth from drinking after her. And then can we get it? If...

The herpes virus can spread from saliva, stop the kissing and when she drinks out of a glass take it to the dishwasher immediately. People who have ordinary herpes, cold sores, can spread the virus to the genital area and it mutates to genital herpes. I don't think I have to tell you to not wear her clothes but I will anyway. By the way, it can spread without any sign like a sore so always use precautions like good hygiene, washing hands a lot and of course anything she or her child eats or drinks out of. As for the toilet, use a disinfectant spray and wipe with a disposble tissue before using it.

ok. there are two kind of herpes - HSV1 and HSV2. HSV1 is oral herpes and HSV2 is genital. now, if she has genital herpes then someone may get it from her if she has genital contact with them. IT IS NOT SPREAD BY TOILETS, KISSING, HUGGING, ETC..... if she has an outbreak on her mouth, then don't kiss. that's simple. SHE IS NOT A DISEASE. her son would have been tested for it when he was born, so he should be fine. he will not contract it by using the bathroom. live as normal, its not leprosy.

You cant catch herpes from any inanimate object. The only way she could give it to the kids is if she had it on her mouth.

Well, you can only get GENITAL herpes by sexual contact. So I don't think her son or any of you have anything to worry about. **And "oneafter99" is wrong.
Please read more about it:
