You could put a car from the 1920's on it. or decorate it like the front page out of the New York Times (Extra) from 1927 and add a paperboy (as in extra extra read all about it!).

You can do those things now which are like transfer sheets. Just take a photo in to a bakery and say you need it on an edible tranfer sheet. Like maybe a cute photo from when he was a little boy? Put that on the cake and then do your magic with the frosting.
(I can't bake, but that's what I'd do for a fun topper. And he'll be so surprised!)

Do whatever you want it's your party and if you want something outrageous then make a cake that is shaped like a but or have a rectangular cake with a stripper's picture on it(in icing)!!! that's a great 80s idea!!!

Why dont you make 2 cakes next to each other - an 8 and 0.
Use a good serated knife to cut your pieces. My girlfriend made a 1 and a 6 for her daughter.

I like the ideas of the antique car and NY Times... make the whole cake the newspaper and then write headlines all over it... the Lindbergh flight... the big flood... look online for what made the news then... and of course... the birth of your granddad!

I used to work at a bakery and I've seen some bday cakes for seniors. The most popular was the one with their pictures from when they were younger...or their wedding pictures.

Have fun. We have to go to a surprise birthday party for my step-father-in-law and I just found out his cake is in the shape of boobs. Oh brother.

What about pretty cupcakes in stands on the tables? They are fun, no need to cut, and guests can help themselves. Clean up will be easier for you and let you as the host have more fun.

What is his #1 favorite thing in the whole world? Marzipan figures of his favorite activities would work great and be fun also.
