I am a vegan and my dog eats meat. Dogs are carnivores. Any smart vegan knows that. Some vegans are simply ignorant, just like all other genres of food eaters.

Banned? No. That's silly. There are people out there that literally torture, abuse, and kill their pets. Personally, I'd feed my carnivore pet on a raw meat diet, fresh kill if possible (I'm vegan). Most pet food is just very nasty stuff... if it's completely unsuitable for human consumption, guess what's in it; nothing good. My family dog was eating that crap and got all sorts of lumps and was very sickly. Our previous dog, she didn't fair very well either. I think it's a bit silly to not feed pets fresh kill, such as dead mice to a snake, or dead fish to the wale and dolphins at the zoo, or to you dog or cat at home, but that was up to my parents and all they wanted was the cheapest stuff. Anything dead, is just not very good for them; or me. I suppose fresh frozen is better than highly cooked food. Personally, I think most pets have a horrible life, sitting at home all day waiting for their owners to come home, then if they are lucky, they get to go outside for a pee and a poo, then back in they go, or perhaps a little walk before or after dinner. Wow, what a life.

I agree with you, but not all vegans are like this. I have a vegan friend and she doesn't really care what her dog eats. (Pedigree, yeah it's crap but it DOES have SOME meat in it.)
Just because they think it's mean to eat animals doesn't mean their dogs do, dogs thrive on vegetables and grains and NEED meat in their diet.
Ah well, atleast the dogs are getting fed.
No, no vegan products were recalled, but are any vegan products made by menu foods? no.
Were Innova, Canidae, California Natural or Solid gold recalled? Nope
anyway, I don't think that ALL vegans should be banned, but that vegan dog FOOD should be banned.. what's the point of it anyway? There's no such thing as a "meat sensitive" dog

To be honest, most of the vegetarian pet foods on the market are far better in overall quality than what MOST people feed their pets.
That said, even as a vegetarian, I feed my animals meat-based diets. BUT I would never in a million years feed them the nasty commercial foods that most people feed their pets. Purina, Science Diet, Iams, Ol' Roy, whatever... it's all the same crap (as proven by the current recall). I feed my dogs and cats premium foods made by small companies which use only human grade ingredients made in the US. I'd feed my animals a quality vegetarian food made by one of those companies long before I'd feed them anything you can buy at Walmart or the grocery store.

Dogs do just fine on a Vegan diet, Cats can, however it's abit harder.
I'm not so concerned about the diet as why a "Vegan" is buying an animal as a opposed to rescuing one.
Considering your past questions, I call BS.

1.I don't see why a vegan would get a kitten from a pet store rather than a pound?
2.They put downer cows in pet foods, pretty much the worst type of meat that you can buy.Dogs and cats can get mad cow disease.
3.A vegan dog in australia lived to be 27 years old
4.A lion survived and thrived on a vegegtaran diet(http://www.answersingenesis.org/creation/v22/i2/lion.asp)

Not banned, but educated. Perhaps you could point out that even manufacturers of vegan pet foods don't recommend a 100% vegan diet for cats-it can cause kidney failure. Cats require an amino acid called Taurine-it can be lab synthesized but they don't seem to do as well without any meat at all.
My own comment to Randall-you did realize that vegans consider fish to be meat, right? You say part of your pets diet is fish-that's not vegan.

I sorta agree on both sides of this argument. On one hand feeding your animal a non meat diet, as long as it provides all the necessary vitamins, won't hurt the animal.
On the other hand...any fool knows that cats and dogs are carnivores and are designed to be meat eaters. If they won't eat veggie food then it is, indeed, torture.
The best advice for any pet owner or prospective pet owner, is to consult a veterinarian on the dietary needs of the pet. More importantly, they should ask about the effects of a vegetarian diet on the animal.

Only the wacked out, fanatical ones should be banned from owning pets. :) Dogs can live without meat--cats can NOT. I'm sure you can buy supplements or something to try to keep the cat relatively healthy, but how can you force an animal that was made a carnivore (by God himself, no doubt!) to adapt to your eating habits? Animals rely on us to ensure their health, take care of them, and give them a good home. Feeding a cat a vegan diet seems like a form of abuse to me. What happens when the owner finds the cat eating a mouse or bird that it's killed? Force feed it loads of water, roughage (greens) and then give it an enema to rid it's body of the impurities of meat? (rolling eyes)

You people do not know what you are talking about! Those that are vegan are the only smart ones. You make your dog or cat vegan because this is the only way to protect your pet from the chemicals in the meat. Do some research before you post nonsense like this. And if you don't care and would still feed your dog or cat meat enjoy your cancer because 40% of you will get it some time in your life. Btw vegans on average live 14 years longer then your average person. Think about that before you flame anyone who wants to make their pet vegan.
