depending on their age, be careful how you tell them. Most factory farmed animals are cruelly slaughtered-chickens and turkeys in particular. They are hung upside down by their feet, and two swinging blades slit their throats-the blades often miss and the live birds drop into a tank of scalding water. Not much better for cows or pigs-they are hung upside down, throats slit, then gutted. A good video for kids is http://www.themeatrix.com/ It uses cartoon characters to depict the horror animals go through. My 12 year old daughter has been a veggie for years, but that is the video I would have used to inform her. Good luck! My daughter LOVES being a veggie.

Have you checked the Peta site.
www.peta.com. They have a kids corner that might help your kids understand why we treat animals humanely.
Depending on their age I am not sure you would want to show them some of the methods used to get meat to the table.
Not all animals are slaughtered in the same manner.
There is more then one step involved.
They are often stunned or drilled in the head.
Then their throats are slit to remove excess blood.
They are then hung so they can be skinned, plucked and butchered.
Then left to age in cold storage before they are shipped to process and packaging plants were they are graded.
I had the worst experience in a summer job working at a chicken hatchery.
100's of chicks sent down a conver belt were they were quickly checked for birth defects in a process known as sexing and injecting.
They were given an injection in the back of the neck to prevent them from getting a disease from turkeys.
If the injection was a miss they would be put into a separate pile so the other chicks did not pick them to death.
They were then put in a crate 110 in each and sent out in truck loads to a factory, where they were fed until old enough to slaughter.
Another truck ride to the slaughter house, this did not happen before their bills were shaved to stubs to stop them from pecking each other to death.
Not a very humane practice any way you look at it.

I worked at one. I am sure you will get a bunch of correct answers by the time I am done typing this. So instead I'll tell you what the place is like instead. First off, they do not pay much money, so they get low rung workers. Most illegal immigrants and crazies and druggies. Most are people you wouldn't want to be near while they have a knife... they ALL did. When you walk into the building, the air is heavy and most. I swear, it smells like DEATH! If you ever smelled true death that's it. You are talking about a nasty grubby building that has been killing animals for decades and decades with people who don't care about their job, nice. You are walking on body greases and dirt tracked in from outside, falling is a major hazard. When you leave for a break or going home, you can slide across the parking lot like it's ice. That's how bad the gunk is. OK, with that said, you know what happens when we'd drop that heavy freshly killed animal meat? You eat it, lol. It is run as a fast paced factory, you think we had time to clean that gunk off? Do you think the bosses wanted it thrown away? Can you imagine how much wasted meat that would be daily? Or worse, the bottom line, how much of the company owner's money would be wasted... they don't care. And the cows, they don't "kill" them persey. They "stun" them. That is that they take an air hammer, and smash a hole through the skull, KO'ing them. But sometimes, they need 2 or 3... OUCH!!! The part I remember most, was my first day. I had about 3 hours sleep and was TIRED. I was standing in this one room on break. After they skin the body, they cut off the head, they head goes to where I was standing. They are tranfered by a man who takes the head jams it on a meat hook. The meat hook is attached to a conveyer belt suspended to the ceiling. It comes to a guy who grabs the jaw, rips it off (that's a bloody job). He then takes his knife and cuts the tongue out. The head passes and goes to a guy who hacks the skull and debrains him, that's nasty because people eat that... head cheese right? So anyways I was tired and seeing all of this, a room full of stripped cow skulls, eye balls intacted, with the remnants of jaw muscle and bloody tongue stub hanging out. Wear ever there was flesh, it would twitch, not even so much twitch but move. And the eyes always seemed to be focused on you. I had a job there also pushing beef sides (like on Rocky), and sometimes they would run a few strides and stop. A hulking 400lbs skinless headless hoofless running half animal is SCARY, it freaks you out when you are not ready. It's almost like they are trying to fight back after death or something. The cow skulls, they looked sad, big puppy dog eyes surrounded in gore and death, sad.

I've never had first hand experience like that guy, but I've seen lots of documentaries... the most recent was the Joaquin Phoenix narrated film called Earthlings. That's a good one to show your kids. No need to shield their eyes, they need to know; everyone does. Here's a link I just found. Wow, is this the whole film on the net? Hm, is that legal?

Three ways to slaughter.a)Kosher b)By Machine C)Islamic Zabhia, //// a and c are almost same, cut the neck of animal half way, to come the whole blood out. This way is more hygienic. Machine slaughter, is to cut the neck with jerk, with this method the whole bold will not come out from the body, so it is danger to eat. Because blood contains more germs.

They lead the cows into a room and drive a steel rod through through their skulls. Despite this they don't die instantly, they kick and go crazy for a few seconds before actually dying.

They get shocked when they come off the transport, then their throats slit by hand and immediately hung upside down to let the blood drain out. That's called "harvesting". Then they go down the line to processing where it's still done by carvers. It ain't pretty.

I wouldn't recommend watching that video Lexie posted, and certainly do NOT show it to your children. I was sobbing hysterically as I watched it. It's the most horrible thing I've ever seen...
It definitely reinforced my commitment to vegetarianism though. :(

Unless your children are old enough you wouldn't really want to show them.
