HIV and hepatitis are tested by a blood sample.

Chlamydia and gonorrhea are tested by a urine sample and sometimes a swab sample.

Trichomoniasis is diagnosed by a physical examination and laboratory test.

Herpes can be diagnosed by a physical examination, a blood, sample, or a sample of fluid from the sores.

Syphilis is usually diagnosed by a blood sample, but it can also be diagnosed by a swab sample from the sores.

HPV is usually detected by an abnormal pap smear. There is NO test to detect HPV in men.

It depends where you live, in the UK it is best to go to an STI clinic they are attached to hospitals in most towns, I think the same applies to Australia and New Zealand too. The treatment is completely anonymous and is free.
In the US then some kind of public facility must be available the best way to find out is to look it up on the net.
