what symptoms are you having? Have you participated in any high risk behaviors with someone who has now turned up positive? Rule of thumb. one test now, another in 6 months.

False negatives do happen but are rare. The most common test used for HIV screening is the ELISA test. It has what is called a sensitivity of anywhere from 99.5% to 99.9% depending on the test used. This means that, in a sample of 1,000 specimens with HIV, HIV will be missed in 5 cases (99.5% sensitivity) or 1 case (99.9% sensitivity). That’s pretty accurate. In a test with such a high sensitivity, there’s actually a greater chance of a false positive, than a false negative. Because of the risk for false positives, a Western Blot is used to confirm a positive ELISA. The Centers for the Disease Control and Prevention estimate that the combined accuracy of an ELISA and Western Blot is greater than 99%.

The most common symptoms are:
fever (raised temperature)
sore throat
body rash

Other symptoms can include:
tiredness
joint pain
muscle pain
swollen glands (nodes)

The symptoms, which can last up to four weeks, are a sign that your immune system is putting up a fight against the virus.
